Critical safety rules:
- •Never drive on pavement at trail pressures -- even short distances at low PSI can destroy a tire or cause de-beading
- •Onboard compressors draw 30--50A -- wire with appropriate gauge and fuse within 18 inches of the battery
- •Compressed air tanks must be rated for the output pressure -- never substitute an unrated vessel
- •Portable compressors have duty cycles -- running them continuously causes overheating and failure
- •De-beading (tire leaving the rim) at low pressure is possible on non-beadlock wheels -- maintain minimum 15 PSI on rocks
What you'll need
For portable trail use: a 12V compressor that runs from your cigarette lighter or battery clips handles most tire inflation tasks. For a permanently mounted onboard system: ARB, Viair, or similar, hard-wired with a tank for faster fill times.
A short hose forces you to reposition the compressor for each tire. A 30-foot hose lets you fill all four tires from a single vehicle position -- critical for mounted onboard systems.
The built-in gauges on most 12V compressors are inaccurate. A separate digital gauge confirms actual tire pressure rather than the compressor's displayed reading.
Onboard compressors draw 30--50A when running. They require a dedicated circuit with a properly rated fuse and relay -- not a cigarette lighter connection.
Airing down to trail pressure (15--20 PSI off-road) takes forever by pressing the valve core manually. A deflator tool with a pressure gauge built in lets you set your target pressure and walk away.
