The right time to find out your circuit is wrong is before the appliance arrives, not after it's in your kitchen. Common electrical requirements by appliance type: - Standard refrigerator: 120V, 15A dedicated circuit - Counter-depth refrigerator: same - Washing machine: 120V, 20A dedicated circuit - Electric dryer: 240V, 30A dedicated circuit (NEMA 14-30 outlet) - Dishwasher: 120V, 20A circuit (may be hardwired or outlet under the sink) - Microwave (over-range): 120V, 20A dedicated circuit - Range/oven (electric): 240V, 50A circuit (NEMA 14-50 outlet) - Range/oven (gas): 120V, 15A for ignition + gas line Dedicated circuit: Most large appliances require a circuit that serves only that appliance, with no other outlets on the same breaker. If you don't have a dedicated circuit, an electrician needs to add one before installation. Check outlet type: Is the outlet the right NEMA type for your appliance? A NEMA 10-30 (3-prong) outlet will not accept a modern NEMA 14-30 (4-prong) dryer cord. This is a code and safety issue, not a preference.

Measure twice: The appliance must physically fit in the space with required clearances. The delivery driver won't install it if it doesn't fit. For built-in spaces (refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine closet): - Measure the opening height, width, and depth - Compare to the appliance's installed dimensions including handles - Check door clearance: the refrigerator door must clear any adjacent cabinets when fully open Ventilation clearances: Refrigerators need 1--3 inches of clearance on top, sides, and rear for airflow. A refrigerator packed tight against cabinets on all sides runs hot and fails early. Utility connection locations: - Water supply shutoff: must be accessible and operable without moving the appliance - Drain: dishwashers drain to the sink drain; washing machines to a standpipe or laundry sink - Gas line (if applicable): must already be rough-in with a shutoff valve. Do not connect gas without leak testing. - Electrical outlet: confirm outlet is in the correct location relative to the appliance's cord length and direction

Move the appliance into approximate position without making any connections. Confirm it fits before connecting anything. Installation order for appliances with multiple connections: 1. Electrical: connect last 2. Gas: connect and leak-test before electrical 3. Water supply: connect and check for leaks before moving the appliance to final position 4. Drain: connect and verify drainage path is correct 5. Level: set final level adjustment after the appliance is in position For water connections: - Use Teflon tape on all threaded connections (2 wraps, clockwise direction) - Hand-tighten first, then add 1/4 turn with a wrench -- no more - Turn on the water supply slowly and inspect every connection for leaks before pushing the appliance to its final position For gas connections (always hire a licensed plumber or gas fitter if uncertain): - Use approved gas connector (flexible stainless braided line) - Apply gas-rated pipe dope or Teflon tape appropriate for gas use - Leak-test every connection with soapy water: bubbles = leak. Fix before proceeding.

Leveling an appliance is not cosmetic -- it affects function, noise, and longevity. Refrigerators: Should be slightly tilted back (rear feet 1/8--1/4 inch lower than front) so doors self-close. Without this, doors hold open, compressor runs longer, and food gets warm. Adjust front feet by turning the adjustable legs. Washing machines: Must be perfectly level in both directions. An unlevel washing machine vibrates and walks during the spin cycle. Check level front-to-back and side-to-side. Adjust all four feet until the machine doesn't rock. Tighten the lock nuts on each foot after adjustment. Dishwashers: Need to be level side-to-side for the door latch to work correctly and for spray arms to distribute water evenly. Adjust the front leveling legs before securing to the cabinet with mounting brackets. Refrigerator door adjustment: After leveling, if the doors aren't hanging even or closing correctly, the hinge can be adjusted. Check the manual for the specific hinge adjustment procedure for your model.

The worst time to find a leak is after the appliance is fully pushed into its built-in space. Testing sequence: 1. Water connections: Turn on supply. Check all connections for drips. Run the appliance through one fill cycle (dishwasher, washing machine). Watch the drain line for leaks or improper drainage. 2. Electrical: Power on the appliance. Confirm it starts, cycles, and shows no error codes. 3. Gas (if applicable): Confirm burners light on all burners and the oven reaches temperature. Smell for gas odor at all connections after a few minutes of operation. 4. Function test: Run through the most common use cycle before accepting the installation as complete. For refrigerators: Leave the refrigerator running for 2--4 hours before loading it with food. Confirm the temperature is reaching the set point (35°F fridge, 0°F freezer) before trusting it with food. Push to final position: Once everything tests correctly, push the appliance to its final position. Do not drag -- use an appliance dolly or furniture sliders. Reconnect any final mounting brackets.
