Most modern appliances display error codes. Before doing anything else: 1. Write down the error code displayed (or note the symptom precisely) 2. Look up the error code: search "[Brand] [Model] error code [code]" 3. The error code narrows the component to test -- it's often not what you'd guess Common symptoms and their usual causes: Washer not draining: - Clogged drain pump filter (check and clean this first -- it's often the only fix needed) - Defective drain pump - Kinked drain hose Dryer not heating: - Thermal fuse (most common -- under $10, tests in 10 seconds with a multimeter) - Heating element (coil visible in the drum area) - High-limit thermostat - Cycling thermostat Refrigerator not cooling: - Dirty condenser coils (clean them first -- this is free) - Failed evaporator fan motor - Defrost heater failure (frost buildup on evaporator) - Refrigerant leak (requires a certified tech) Dishwasher not cleaning well: - Spray arm holes clogged (remove and rinse) - Filter dirty (most dishwashers have a filter under the spray arm) - Wash pump defective For each symptom, check the free fixes first. 30--40% of appliance service calls are resolved by cleaning a filter, clearing a drain, or resetting the appliance.

This is non-optional and non-negotiable: - Unplug from the wall outlet, or turn off the breaker and confirm with a voltage tester - For gas appliances: turn off the gas supply valve and confirm no pilot or igniter is active - For appliances with water connections: turn off the supply valve and have a towel ready Appliance capacitors: Some appliances have capacitors that store charge even after unplugging. Dryer motors and AC units are the primary offenders. A capacitor in a dryer motor can hold enough charge to cause a serious shock even after the appliance is unplugged. Discharge capacitors before touching them (short across terminals with an insulated screwdriver with a resistor in series, or a purpose-built capacitor discharge tool). Water in the appliance: Before disassembling a washing machine for pump access, run a spin cycle to drain as much water as possible. The tub will still have water in the pump housing -- have a shallow pan and towels ready.

Replacing parts without testing them is expensive and often wrong. Many appliance failures are in the control board or wiring harness, not the heating element that "seems" like the problem. Continuity test (most useful for appliance repair): - Set multimeter to continuity mode (often beep icon) - Disconnect the component from the wiring harness - Touch probes to the component's terminals - Beep = continuity = circuit is closed = component is good - No beep = open circuit = component is defective (or intended to be open) Example: thermal fuse test: 1. Unplug dryer 2. Access the thermal fuse (small component on the heat duct or heating element housing) 3. Disconnect wire connectors 4. Test continuity across the two terminals 5. If no continuity: fuse is blown, part needs replacement (~$10) 6. Find out WHY the fuse blew (usually blocked dryer vent) or it will blow again Example: heating element test: 1. Access the heating element (rear panel removal on most dryers) 2. Disconnect both wires 3. Test continuity 4. Should show continuity (closed circuit): if open, element is burned through, needs replacement

The same appliance part -- a door switch, a water inlet valve, a pump -- looks similar but is not interchangeable between models. The only reliable way to get the right part is the model number. Finding the model number: - Refrigerator: inside door on a sticker (left or right wall, often near the top) - Washer/dryer: inside the door opening - Dishwasher: inside the door edge - Range/oven: storage drawer area, door frame, or inside the oven door Part number sources: 1. From the defective part itself: component parts often have a part number printed on them 2. From the service manual (downloadable for most brands) 3. From Repair Clinic, AppliancePartsPros, or PartSelect: enter model number and the part name OEM vs aftermarket: OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts are made by the appliance manufacturer or their supplier. For safety-critical components (control boards, heating elements, thermal fuses): stick to OEM or well-reviewed aftermarket from a reputable supplier. For basic parts (hose washers, door gaskets, plastic parts): aftermarket is usually fine.

An appliance component rarely fails without a reason. Replacing the failed part and ignoring the root cause means the new part fails sooner. Common root causes to address: Dryer thermal fuse blown: - Root cause: restricted airflow. Clean the entire vent duct from dryer to exterior. A partially blocked duct causes the dryer to overheat and blow fuses repeatedly. - Fix vent: disconnect duct at dryer and exterior vent. Run a vent cleaning brush through the duct. Remove any nesting material, lint buildup, or crushed sections. Washer motor/pump overheating: - Root cause: overloading, laundry caught in drain pump, or failed bearings causing high current draw. Inspect and clean the drain pump. Refrigerator compressor failure: - Root cause: dirty condenser coils (forces compressor to work harder and run hotter for years until it fails). Annual coil cleaning extends compressor life. Dishwasher water inlet valve failure: - Root cause: hard water deposits build up and jam the valve. Water softener or in-line water filter reduces recurrence. Always fix the root cause. Always.
