Camera Setup & Configuration

Charge the battery fully before turning on the camera. The charger light goes solid (not blinking) when done. Insert the SD card. Go to the menu -- find Format (usually under Setup or Tools tab). Format the card IN the camera, not on your computer. In-camera formatting creates the correct folder structure for your specific camera model. A card formatted on a Mac or PC may work, but can cause issues with certain cameras during high-speed shooting or video. Speed check: After formatting, take 20 rapid burst shots. If the camera buffers and slows down, your card is too slow for that camera's buffer. Faster card needed. Important: Format erases everything on the card. Only format a card you've already backed up or one that's brand new.

Menu → Setup → Date/Time. Set the correct date, time, and time zone. This metadata embeds in every photo you take -- it's how Lightroom, Google Photos, and every other app organizes your library by date. If you travel, update the time zone when you arrive. Nothing is more annoying than a vacation photobook sorted wrong because the camera was still on home time. Copyright: In the menu (usually under Setup → Copyright or Author Info), type your name. It embeds in the EXIF data of every image. Useful for professional photographers; optional for everyone else.

Menu → Image Quality (or Shooting → Image Size). JPEG: The camera processes the image and gives you a finished file. Smaller file size. Editable but with less latitude. Good for casual shooting, vacation photos, anything going straight to social media. RAW: Unprocessed sensor data. Large files (20--50MB each). Requires editing software (Lightroom, Capture One, even Apple Photos). Dramatically more editing latitude -- recover blown highlights, fix white balance after the fact, pull shadow detail that JPEG would have crushed. Required for professional work. RAW + JPEG: Shoots both simultaneously. Uses twice the card space. Useful while you're learning -- you get the immediate JPEG plus the RAW for editing later. Recommendation: If you're new to the camera, shoot RAW + JPEG. As you get comfortable editing RAW files, drop the JPEG. Image size: Shoot at the camera's full resolution. Downsize later if needed. Never shoot at reduced resolution -- you can't get megapixels back.

Autofocus has two main axes: how it finds focus, and how it tracks moving subjects. AF area mode (where the camera focuses): - Single point: You pick exactly where to focus. Best for controlled situations, portraits where you want to nail the eye, still subjects. - Wide/Zone: Camera picks from a wide area. Fast for snapshots, less precise. - Subject tracking/Eye-AF: Camera detects and tracks faces and eyes. Modern mirrorless cameras do this well. Turn it on if your camera has it -- it's genuinely useful. AF drive mode (how it follows moving subjects): - One-Shot / AF-S: Locks focus when you half-press the shutter. Releases when you lift your finger. Best for still subjects. - Continuous / AF-C: Keeps tracking focus as long as you half-press. Best for moving subjects -- kids, sports, pets, birds. - Auto: Camera decides. Unreliable for critical work. Avoid. For most general shooting: single point AF-S for controlled shots, continuous + subject tracking for anything that moves.

Three things control exposure: Aperture (f-stop), Shutter Speed, and ISO. Aperture (f/1.8, f/5.6, f/11): Controls depth of field and how much light enters. Lower number = wider opening = more light + shallower depth of field (blurry background). Higher number = narrower opening = less light + more in focus. Shutter Speed (1/60, 1/500, 1/2000): Controls motion blur. Faster speed = freezes motion. Slower speed = motion blur. Rule of thumb: minimum shutter speed = 1 divided by focal length (at 50mm, don't go below 1/50 handheld). ISO (100, 400, 3200, 12800): Sensor sensitivity. Higher ISO = brighter image in low light = more grain/noise. Keep ISO as low as possible. Use Auto ISO with a maximum cap (set max to 3200 or 6400 depending on your camera's performance). Shooting modes: - Auto: Camera decides everything. Good for learning but you're not in control. - Aperture Priority (Av/A): You set aperture, camera sets shutter. Most useful mode. Use this 80% of the time. - Shutter Priority (Tv/S): You set shutter speed, camera sets aperture. Good for sports, freezing motion. - Manual (M): You set everything. Required for studio work, tripod shooting, consistent lighting.

Download the manufacturer's app before turning on the camera's WiFi: - Canon: Camera Connect - Nikon: SnapBridge - Sony: Imaging Edge Mobile - Fujifilm: FUJIFILM Camera Remote - Panasonic: Lumix Sync On the camera: Menu → WiFi/Network → Connect to Smartphone (or similar). The camera will display a QR code or SSID + password. In the app: tap Add Camera and follow the pairing steps. Once paired: you can transfer images to your phone via the app, use your phone as a remote viewfinder, and trigger the shutter remotely (useful for self-portraits and tripod work). SnapBridge (Nikon) pairs via Bluetooth and auto-transfers images in the background while the camera is on. Useful but drains battery faster. One-time tip: After pairing, transfer one image and confirm it arrives on your phone at full resolution. Some apps default to transferring a compressed version.

Before your first serious shoot, check the sensor for dust. Set the camera to f/16 or f/22, point it at a plain blue sky or white wall, and shoot. Open the image at 100% zoom -- any dark spots are dust on the sensor. If there's dust: Use the camera's built-in sensor cleaning (usually in Menu → Setup → Sensor Cleaning → Clean Now). Run this a few times. For persistent spots, use a rocket blower to gently blow across the sensor (camera powered off, lens removed, camera face-down) or book a professional sensor clean. Now do a test shoot: - Take 5 portraits -- check eye focus sharpness - Take 5 shots of something moving -- check continuous AF tracking - Take 5 shots in a dim room -- check high ISO noise - Take 5 burst shots -- confirm the card keeps up Review on the camera and on a computer. Zoom to 100% for every shot you'd want to keep. If something looks off, you want to know now, before the shoot that matters.
