Before you open anything:
- •Unplug from wall power before opening any desktop or laptop. For laptops, disconnect the battery cable as the first step inside -- even a powered-off laptop can short if the battery is connected.
- •Wear your anti-static wrist strap and clip it to bare metal inside the case or to a grounded surface. Static you can't feel can silently fry RAM, GPU, and SSD components instantly.
- •Do not force anything. If a connector, clip, or screw isn't moving, you're doing it wrong. Stop and look up the disassembly guide for your specific model on iFixit.com before proceeding.
- •Some repairs -- especially on newer MacBooks and Surface devices -- will void your warranty. Check your warranty status before opening the case. If still under warranty, use the manufacturer's repair program first.
- •Overheating causes data loss. If the machine is shutting down randomly due to heat, stop using it until the heat issue is resolved. Each unexpected shutdown risks corrupting your drive.
- •Do not spray compressed air into a running fan -- it can overspeed and damage the bearings. Always hold the fan blade still with a toothpick or finger while spraying.
- •Back up your data BEFORE attempting any hardware repair. If the drive is still accessible, copy everything to an external drive first. A repair attempt on a failing machine can push a struggling drive over the edge.

Identify and document the symptom precisely
Vague symptoms lead to vague repairs. Before doing anything, write down exactly what is happening:
-- When does it happen? On startup, after 20 minutes, only when plugged in, only on battery, only during video calls?
-- What exactly do you see? Blue screen (note the error code), black screen, frozen cursor, random restarts, specific app crashes, or just general slowness?
-- Did anything change right before it started? New app installed, Windows update, drop or spill, power outage?
-- Does it happen every time or intermittently? Intermittent problems are harder to diagnose and harder to confirm as fixed.
For blue screens (BSODs): write down the STOP code (e.g., KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE, MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). These codes tell you which subsystem failed. Search the exact code to narrow the cause -- RAM failures produce different codes than driver crashes.
For slow performance: open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and go to the Performance tab. Check CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU usage while the machine is struggling. If disk is at 100%, that points to a failing drive or a runaway background process. If memory is maxed, you may have a leak or simply not enough RAM for your workload.
Pro tip: Use the Windows Event Viewer (search 'Event Viewer' in Start) to see a log of system errors and crashes with timestamps. Look under Windows Logs → System for critical errors around the time of crashes.

Try the quick software fixes first
Before opening a single panel, exhaust the software possibilities. Most 'hardware' problems are actually software.
Restart (not sleep, not hibernate -- actually restart): clears RAM, resets drivers, applies pending updates. If you haven't restarted in days, this fixes a surprising percentage of problems.
Run Windows Update: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates. Driver updates for your GPU and network adapter often fix crashes and stability issues.
Run Disk Check: open Command Prompt as Administrator, type: chkdsk C: /f /r -- then press Y and restart. This schedules a disk scan on next boot, checks for filesystem errors, and marks bad sectors. It takes 20--60 minutes but catches a lot.
On Mac: run Disk Utility → First Aid on your startup disk. Same idea.
Check for malware: run a full scan with Windows Defender (Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection → Quick Scan → Scan Options → Full Scan). A background infection can cause slowness, crashes, and high CPU usage that looks exactly like hardware failure.
Check startup programs: Task Manager → Startup tab. Disable anything you don't recognize or need at boot. A machine that takes 5 minutes to become usable after login is almost always caused by too many startup programs fighting for resources.
Pro tip: Slow after updates? Check if Windows is still indexing in the background -- search 'Indexing Options' in Start and see if it's active. Also check if Windows Defender is running a post-update scan. Give it 30 minutes to settle before concluding something is wrong.

Run built-in diagnostics
Windows and Mac both ship with hardware diagnostic tools. Use them before assuming the worst.
Windows Memory Diagnostic:
Search 'Windows Memory Diagnostic' in Start → Restart now and check for problems. This runs on reboot and tests RAM for errors. Results appear after Windows restarts -- check Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System, filter for MemoryDiagnostics-Results. Bad RAM causes crashes, BSODs, and random reboots.
Check disk health (SMART status):
Open PowerShell as Administrator and run: Get-PhysicalDisk | Get-StorageReliabilityCounter | Select DeviceId, ReadErrorsTotal, WriteErrorsTotal, Temperature
Or download CrystalDiskInfo (free, crystalmark.info) -- it gives you a clear Good/Caution/Bad rating for each drive. Any status other than Good means the drive is failing. Back up immediately.
Check GPU temperature under load:
Download GPU-Z or HWMonitor (both free). Run your problem task (gaming, video, etc.) and watch the GPU and CPU temperatures. GPU should stay under 85°C. CPU should stay under 90°C. Consistent spikes above those numbers mean thermal throttling -- the system slows itself down to survive.
Apple Diagnostics (Mac):
Shut down → hold D while pressing power. The built-in diagnostic runs and returns error codes. Look up any code at support.apple.com/en-us/102611 for the specific component it's flagging.
Pro tip: CrystalDiskInfo is free and takes 30 seconds to install. If your drive shows 'Caution' or 'Bad,' stop everything and back up before any further troubleshooting. A failing drive is a ticking clock.

Check hardware -- RAM seating, connections, and overheating
If diagnostics come back clean but problems persist, it's time to open the case. Always unplug power first. For laptops, disconnect the battery as the first step after removing the back panel.
RAM (memory sticks):
Open the case and locate the RAM slots. Press the side clips outward to release each stick. Remove completely, then firmly press back in until the clips click. Loose RAM is a surprisingly common cause of crashes and BSODs -- especially after the machine has been moved or transported.
If you have two sticks, try running with one at a time in the slot closest to the CPU. If the problem disappears with one stick removed, you've found the bad module.
Drive connections:
On desktops, SATA data cables (the thin L-shaped connectors) can work loose. Unplug and firmly reseat both ends -- at the drive and at the motherboard. Also check the SATA power connector from the power supply.
On laptops, M.2 SSDs have a single screw holding them down. If it's loose, the drive can lose contact intermittently. Reseat and re-tighten.
Check for overheating signs:
-- Heatsink fins packed with dust (use compressed air -- hold fans still while spraying)
-- CPU heatsink that wiggles when touched (mounting pressure lost -- needs reseating with fresh thermal paste)
-- Fan that doesn't spin when you expect it to
Pro tip: iFixit.com has step-by-step teardown guides for nearly every laptop model. Search your exact model before opening it -- some laptops have hidden screws under rubber feet or keyboard keys, and forcing them breaks the case.

Clean dust from fans and vents with compressed air
Dust buildup is the single most common cause of overheating, and overheating is the most common cause of 'random shutdowns,' slowness under load, and fan noise. This step alone fixes a huge percentage of performance complaints.
Hold the can upright -- tilting it can release liquid propellant that damages components.
Hold each fan blade still with a toothpick or finger before spraying. Allowing the fan to spin from the air blast can overspeed it and damage the bearings.
Spray in short bursts into:
-- CPU fan and heatsink fins (blow toward the vent exit, not into the machine)
-- GPU fan and heatsink (if applicable)
-- All intake vents (usually bottom or side of laptop)
-- All exhaust vents (usually rear or side)
-- Power supply fan on desktops
For laptops that are heavily clogged: you may need to fully remove the fan/heatsink assembly to properly clean the fins. This is model-specific -- consult iFixit. After reassembly, apply fresh thermal paste to the CPU (and GPU if it has a pad) before reinstalling the heatsink.
After cleaning, run HWMonitor and stress the machine (run a benchmark or a demanding task for 10 minutes). Compare temperatures before and after. A well-cleaned machine commonly drops 15--25°C under load.
Pro tip: Do this outside or over a trash can. The dust that comes out of a 3-year-old laptop is alarming. Don't do it over carpet -- static. Don't do it near your face -- it's genuinely disgusting.

Test components individually to isolate the fault
If cleaning and reseating didn't resolve the issue, you need to narrow the suspect list. The key is changing one variable at a time.
For RAM: if you have two sticks, test with each one individually. Run the machine for 30 minutes under normal use with only stick A, then only stick B. If the problem only appears with one stick, that stick is bad.
For storage: boot from a USB drive with a live Linux distro (Ubuntu is fine -- download the ISO, use Rufus to write it to USB). If the machine runs stably from the USB with no crashes, your internal drive or OS installation is the problem, not the hardware.
For GPU (desktop): if you have integrated graphics, remove the discrete GPU and run from the motherboard video output. If stability returns, the GPU is the issue (overheating, failing memory, or driver corruption).
For power supply (desktop): a failing PSU causes random shutdowns, BSODs, and instability that mimics RAM and CPU problems. Borrow a known-good PSU of similar or higher wattage and swap it in temporarily to test.
Document every test and result. You're building a case that points at a specific component.
Pro tip: MemTest86 (memtest86.com) is the gold standard for RAM testing. Download it, boot from USB, and let it run for at least 2 full passes (can take 2--4 hours). Any errors at all mean the RAM is bad.

Replace the failed component (if identified)
Once you've isolated the culprit, replacement is usually straightforward -- IF you have the right part.
RAM replacement: match the exact specification. Check your current stick's speed (DDR4-2666, DDR4-3200, DDR5-4800, etc.), form factor (SODIMM for laptops, DIMM for desktops), and capacity. Use Crucial's System Scanner (crucial.com/store/systemscanner) to identify compatible upgrades automatically.
SSD replacement: if upgrading from HDD to SSD, clone the old drive first using free tools like Macrium Reflect Free or Samsung Data Migration. If the old drive is failing, install fresh and restore from backup. M.2 NVMe drives slot in at an angle, push down flat, and secure with a single screw.
Battery replacement (laptop): order from the manufacturer or a reputable third-party seller (avoid the cheapest no-name options -- they can swell or underperform). Most modern laptops have internal batteries accessible by removing the bottom panel. Disconnect old battery cable, remove screws, swap, reconnect.
Fan replacement: find the exact fan model for your specific laptop (iFixit or eBay by model number). Fans are usually held by 2--3 screws and one cable connector. Note the cable routing before removal.
After any component swap, power on and verify the original problem is resolved before reassembling everything.
Pro tip: Take photos at every step of disassembly -- especially cable routing and screw positions. Laptop screws come in different lengths and threading, and putting the wrong screw in the wrong hole can crack the motherboard or strip a post.

Know when repair cost exceeds replacement value
Not every repair is worth doing. Here's the framework:
Rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than 50% of what an equivalent replacement machine costs today, replace it. A 7-year-old laptop worth $200 on the used market isn't worth a $180 motherboard repair.
Parts to replace without hesitation (relatively cheap, high impact):
-- RAM: $30--60 for most laptops. Usually worth replacing.
-- SSD: $50--100 for a 500GB--1TB drive. Almost always worth it if the drive is failing.
-- Battery: $30--80 for most laptops. Definitely worth it if everything else is fine.
-- Thermal paste + cleaning service: cheap and extends life significantly.
Parts where math matters:
-- Motherboard: expensive and model-specific. Often exceeds replacement value on machines over 5 years old.
-- Screen: $80--200+ depending on model. Worth it for a machine that's otherwise in great shape.
-- Keyboard: $30--80 for most laptops. Usually worth it.
If the machine is over 7 years old and has multiple failing components, the conversation becomes: do you want to invest in a diminishing asset, or put that money toward a machine that will be faster, more secure, and supported for years?

Final verification -- confirm the fix and prevent recurrence
Don't declare victory after one successful boot. Run the machine through its paces:
✓ Run the machine for at least 2 hours under normal workload -- the original problem may be intermittent
✓ If it was overheating: check temperatures under load with HWMonitor. CPU should stay under 85°C, GPU under 80°C
✓ If it was crashing: run the task that triggered crashes at least 3 times without failure
✓ If it was a drive issue: run CrystalDiskInfo one more time -- confirm the new drive shows 'Good'
✓ Run Windows Memory Diagnostic one final time to confirm RAM is solid
✓ Check Task Manager during use -- no process should be pegging CPU or disk at 100%
Prevent recurrence:
-- Set up automatic backups if you haven't already (OneDrive + external drive)
-- Clean dust from vents every 6 months (set a calendar reminder)
-- Keep Windows Update running -- don't defer it for months
-- Don't install software from sketchy sources
-- If you added RAM or an SSD, make sure they're running at the right speed (Task Manager → Performance → Memory shows current speed)
