Dash Cam Installation

Windshield mount position: Behind the rearview mirror is the standard location. The camera is hidden from driver view and captures road ahead. Some states prohibit objects mounted on the windshield outside specific zones -- check your state's law. Mount type: Adhesive suction cup or adhesive pad. Suction cups are removable but can fall in heat. Adhesive mounts are permanent but stable year-round. For a clean install, use the adhesive mount. Mount angle: The camera should capture the full road ahead, the hood edge at the bottom of frame (proves it's your vehicle), and the horizon. Set the angle before routing any cable. For rear camera: Usually mounts inside the rear window, upper center. Route the rear camera cable inside the headliner and down the door pillar. Most rear cameras clip or suction to the inside of the rear glass.

The power cable runs from the camera (mounted at the windshield top center) to your power source (OBD-II port near the driver's feet or fuse box). Clean route (recommended): 1. Tuck the cable up along the top of the windshield rubber seal using the wire tuck tool 2. Run the cable down the A-pillar (the vertical trim column between windshield and front door) 3. Run along the door sill trim at the floor 4. Plug into OBD-II port under the dash, or continue to the fuse box for hardwire For rear camera cable: route across the headliner (above the headliner trim if possible), down the C-pillar on the opposite side from the front cable, along the rear floor sill. Avoid: Leaving the cable dangling across the windshield, zip-tying to the steering column, or routing across the driver's pedal area.

Option 1 -- Cigarette lighter (12V accessory port): Easiest. Cable visible. Works fine. Best for trying the dashcam before committing to a permanent install. Option 2 -- OBD-II power adapter: Plugs into the OBD-II diagnostic port (under the dash, driver's side). Invisible from the cabin. Turns on and off with the ignition. No parking mode. About $10--$20. Best for most users. Option 3 -- Hardwire kit (fuse box): Required for 24/7 parking mode recording. Routes to the car's fuse box. Connects to a switched fuse (powers off with ignition) for normal recording and an always-on fuse for parking mode standby. For parking mode: The hardwire kit includes a voltage cutoff module that stops recording when the battery drops below ~11.8V. This prevents the dashcam from draining the car battery overnight. Fuse tap process: Open the fuse box cover. Identify a switched fuse (one that's active when the key is in ACC or ON). The fuse tap replaces the original fuse and provides a second slot for the dashcam's fuse.

Format the SD card in the camera (not on a computer) on first use. Menu → Format Storage. This creates the correct folder structure for the camera's loop recording system. Key settings to configure: - Resolution: 4K or 1080p (higher = better plate readability but larger files and shorter loop) - Loop recording: Usually 1, 3, or 5 minute clips. Shorter clips = smaller files that overwrite themselves more frequently - G-sensor sensitivity: Triggers event file protection on impact. Set to Medium -- too high creates false events from rough roads, too low misses real impacts - Timestamp: Enable. Enables the overlay of date and time on footage (required for insurance claims) - Parking mode: Enable if using hardwire kit. Set the voltage cutoff threshold Date/time: Set the correct date and time immediately. Incident footage without correct timestamp can be challenged in legal proceedings.

After install, drive 1 mile and stop. Access the recorded footage via the camera's screen or pull the SD card. Confirm: - Footage is recording (files exist on the card) - Timestamp is correct - The front camera captures full road including both lane markings - The license plate of a parked car is legible at 30 feet - The rear camera captures the road behind without the camera cord in frame - No reflections of dashboard or ceiling in the windshield glass that obscure the image Reflections: If you see a bright dashboard reflection in the footage, try a lens hood (some dashcams include one) or reposition slightly. Dark dashboards rarely have this issue. Loop recording: Confirm the camera records continuously and overwrites old clips. After 2--3 hours of driving, the oldest clips should be replaced by newer ones.
