Dishwasher Installation

Dishwasher installation touches both electricity and plumbing simultaneously. Both must be off before you start. Water: Turn off the hot water supply valve under the sink. It's usually a 3/8" compression fitting with a shutoff valve. Turn clockwise until closed. Confirm it's off by briefly opening the hot side of the sink faucet -- water stops flowing when the valve is fully closed. Electricity: Dishwashers are typically hardwired (no plug) to a dedicated 20A circuit. Go to the breaker box and turn off the breaker labeled "Dishwasher" or the kitchen circuit the dishwasher is on. Confirm power is off by testing at the junction box under the counter with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires. If replacing an existing dishwasher: Turn off the water and power first, then pull out the old unit. Slide it forward slowly -- there's usually a water line and electrical cable you need to disconnect before it can come fully out. Have towels ready -- water will be in the supply line when you disconnect it.

The water supply connects to the inlet valve at the bottom front of the dishwasher. Inlet valve connection: 1. Locate the inlet valve (usually has a 3/8" or 1/2" NPT female connection) 2. Apply Teflon tape (2--3 wraps clockwise) to the male threads of the supply elbow 3. Thread the 90-degree elbow into the inlet valve -- hand tight plus 1--1.5 turns with a wrench 4. Connect the supply line (braided stainless recommended) between the elbow and the shutoff valve under the sink 5. Hand-tighten both ends, then 1/4 turn with a wrench -- do not overtighten Before sliding the dishwasher into position: Turn on the water supply briefly to test for leaks at both connections. It's much easier to fix a supply line leak now than after the dishwasher is under the counter. Note the orientation of the elbow: It should point toward where the supply line exits into the sink cabinet. If the elbow points the wrong direction, water pressure on a kinked line will cause the connection to leak.

The drain line must have either a high loop or an air gap to prevent dirty sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. High loop method (most common): 1. Route the drain line up under the counter as high as possible before going down to the sink drain connection 2. Secure the high point with a cable clamp to the underside of the counter 3. Connect the end to the side port on the sink drain or garbage disposal 4. If connecting to a garbage disposal: remove the knockout plug inside the disposal connection before attaching the hose Air gap method (required by code in some areas): 1. An air gap is a device mounted through the sink or counter with two connections -- one from the dishwasher, one to the disposal 2. It provides positive backflow prevention that a high loop cannot 3. Check local plumbing code -- California and several other states require air gaps Drain connection at disposal or drain: - Use a hose clamp, tightened firmly - Check that the disposal knockout is removed if connecting there -- this is the most common dishwasher "won't drain" call that turns out to be a simple forgotten step

Most dishwashers have a junction box cover on the front bottom panel where the hardwired connection is made. Typical wiring: - Black (dishwasher) → Black (house) hot - White (dishwasher) → White (house) neutral - Green or bare copper (dishwasher) → Bare copper or green (house) ground Connection method: 1. Remove the junction box cover 2. Route the house wiring through the strain relief fitting 3. Connect with wire nuts (wire nuts rated for the wire gauge -- 12 AWG for 20A circuits) or push-in connectors rated for the application 4. Wrap each connection with electrical tape for additional security in a wet-adjacent environment 5. Tuck connections into the junction box without crushing them 6. Secure house wiring in the strain relief so it cannot be pulled out Code note: The electrical connection and the supply line should not be in the same compartment -- they're typically separated by a panel in the dishwasher's toe kick area. Keep them separated.

Level the dishwasher: 1. With the dishwasher partially in position, check level side-to-side with a torpedo level on the door frame 2. Adjust the leveling feet (typically hex adjustment accessed from the front bottom) until level 3. Also check front-to-back -- the dishwasher should be level or very slightly back-tilted Secure to cabinet: - Dishwashers mount to the underside of the counter with two mounting brackets that screw upward through holes in the tabs on the top of the dishwasher - If the counter is stone or tile: use side-mount brackets that screw into the cabinet sidewalls instead - These brackets prevent the dishwasher from tipping out when someone opens the loaded door Test before final push-in: 1. Turn on the water supply, check for leaks at supply connections 2. Turn on the circuit breaker 3. Run a rinse cycle and watch for leaks at the drain connection, under the dishwasher 4. Confirm the drain is flowing correctly 5. If everything is dry and working: push the dishwasher fully into position and install the front panel Final check: After the first full wash cycle, check under the sink and under the front panel for any moisture. A small drip that wasn't visible during testing often shows up during the first full cycle.
