Video Doorbell Installation

This is the single most important choice and it determines everything else. Wired video doorbells use your existing low-voltage doorbell wiring to provide continuous power. Advantages: always-on connection, continuous recording on many models, no battery charging. Requirements: existing doorbell wiring with 16--24VAC transformer output. If you have a wired doorbell now (the button rings a chime box inside the house), you likely have this. Battery video doorbells have a rechargeable battery. Advantages: installs anywhere -- no existing wiring required, works on rental properties, works on gates or fences far from the house. Disadvantages: battery lasts 1--6 months depending on motion frequency, you must recharge it (some models have hardwire charging options). How to tell if you have wired doorbell capability: Is there a doorbell button on your door right now? Unscrew it and look behind it. Two wires = you have doorbell wiring. No wires = no wiring, go battery or run new wire. Before buying a wired model, measure your transformer voltage (see Step 2). Some older homes have 8--12VAC transformers -- below the 16VAC minimum for most smart doorbells. A new 24VAC doorbell transformer costs about $20 and installs in the chime box or near your panel. Required skill level: basic electrical. If that sounds like a problem, battery is your path.

Find your chime box (the interior box that makes the ding-dong sound -- typically in a hallway or near the front door). Open the cover (usually one screw or just snaps off). You'll see wires labeled FRONT, TRANS, and REAR. Set your multimeter to AC voltage (VAC), 200V range. Touch probes to the TRANS terminal and the FRONT terminal (don't worry about touching low-voltage AC terminals -- it's safe). Read the voltage. 16--24VAC: you're in range for most wired smart doorbells. 8--14VAC: too low. You need a new transformer. A 24VAC 30VA doorbell transformer costs about $20 at Home Depot and replaces the old one at the chime box. No reading: your transformer may be dead, or the circuit is off. Check the breaker labeled 'doorbell' or 'chime' -- there usually is one on the main panel. Also look at your chime box type: mechanical (has a physical striker and two tone bars -- makes a real ding-dong sound) or digital (electronic speaker, usually a small rectangular box). Most smart doorbells work with both, but mechanical chimes sometimes need the included resistor/adapter to prevent buzzing. Digital chimes occasionally need to be bypassed entirely if they're incompatible -- in that case, use the Alexa Chime app or a Ring Chime plug-in instead.

Turn off the breaker labeled 'doorbell' or 'chime.' Confirm with your voltage tester that the doorbell button wires are de-energized (they should read zero -- low-voltage wiring). Unscrew the old doorbell button (one or two screws). Pull it away from the wall. You'll see two wires connected to screw terminals or push-in connectors. Note which wire is on which terminal -- a phone photo works. Disconnect the wires. The wires may be bare copper or have thin insulation in various colors. They're interchangeable for standard doorbells -- polarity doesn't matter for low-voltage AC doorbell circuits. (It does matter for some smart doorbells, so read your specific model's instructions.) If the wires are too short (fell back into the wall) or corroded at the tips: strip back 1/2" of insulation to expose fresh copper. Corroded connections are one of the most common causes of smart doorbell connection issues.

Most video doorbells ship with a mounting bracket that attaches to the wall, then the doorbell body snaps or screws onto the bracket. Mounting to wood/siding: Use the included screws and the template if provided. Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood. If studs are in your wall here, use them -- otherwise use exterior-rated wall anchors. Mounting to brick or stucco: Use a masonry bit and plastic anchors (sometimes called rawl plugs). Drill the hole, tap the anchor in, and drive the screw into the anchor. Do not try to drive screws directly into brick -- they won't hold. Many video doorbells include an angle wedge mount (15-degree wedge) that points the camera to cover more of the entryway when the doorbell is mounted perpendicular to the door (like on a door frame pillar). Consider using it if your door is recessed or the camera would otherwise just see the ceiling. Route the two doorbell wires through the bracket's wire hole before mounting. Mount the bracket level -- step back and eyeball it before drilling the second screw.

Connect the two doorbell wires to the terminals on the back of the smart doorbell body (or bracket, depending on model). For most doorbells, these are labeled or shown in the quick-start guide. As mentioned -- polarity doesn't matter for standard AC doorbells, but some smart doorbells (Ring Pro, Nest) specifically label the terminals. Follow the guide. Now: before restoring power, install the chime kit / compatibility adapter if your doorbell requires one. Ring includes a "Pro Power Kit" with Ring Pro and Pro 2 -- this installs in the chime box, inserted into the FRONT terminal. It reduces voltage fluctuations that can cause the mechanical chime to buzz continuously. Failure to install it means your chime buzzes 24/7. Google Nest Doorbell: check Nest's compatibility checker at nest.com/support before assuming your chime works. Some chimes are listed as incompatible -- in those cases, Nest recommends bypassing the chime and using the Google Home app for doorbell sounds. Snap the doorbell body onto the bracket. Restore the breaker power. The doorbell LED should illuminate within about 30 seconds.

Open the doorbell's app (Ring, Google Home, or Eufy Security) on your phone. Tap "Set up a device" or the + button. Ring: Scan the QR code on the back of the doorbell or the box, then follow the in-app flow. The doorbell broadcasts a temporary Wi-Fi network during setup -- the app connects your phone to it, configures it, then hands it your home Wi-Fi password. Google Nest: Scan the QR code or enter the setup key from the box. Google Home walks you through connecting to your home network. Nest doorbells need a strong 2.4GHz or 5GHz signal -- they support both bands. Eufy: Open the Eufy Security app → Add Device → follow setup flow. Eufy uses 2.4GHz only during initial setup, then can switch to 5GHz on compatible models. After setup, confirm the doorbell is online in the app. The live view button should show your front door within about 5 seconds. If the live view fails or is slow: your doorbell's Wi-Fi signal may be weak. Check signal strength in the device settings -- you want above -60 dBm. Anything below -70 dBm causes unreliable notifications and video.

Out of the box, most video doorbells detect motion across the entire camera field -- which means you'll get alerts for every car driving past, the wind moving a tree, and the neighbor's dog. Configure motion zones immediately. In the Ring app: tap the doorbell → Motion Settings → Motion Zones. Draw a polygon (drag the handles) that covers your porch and front path only -- exclude the public sidewalk and street. In Google Home/Nest: tap the doorbell → Settings → Activity Zones. Draw zones covering just the areas you care about. You can also set "person alerts only" which uses on-device AI to distinguish people from general motion -- this is very effective. Motion sensitivity: set this to medium or lower first and live with it for a week. Maximum sensitivity combined with a wide zone means constant false alerts, and you'll turn off notifications entirely. Better to miss some edge-case motion and actually act on the alerts you get. Motion frequency (Ring): if your Ring fires too often, set this to "Regularly" or "Periodically" rather than "Frequently." It adds a cooldown between alerts.

Two-way audio works out of the box in all major video doorbells. Open the live view in the app and tap the microphone icon to speak. Your visitor hears you through the doorbell speaker. You hear them through your phone. Test it: have someone stand at the door while you listen from another room. If you can hear them clearly but they can't hear you -- your doorbell's speaker volume may need adjustment in settings. If audio cuts out intermittently -- weak Wi-Fi signal, see Step 6. Subscriptions: Ring requires Ring Protect ($3--10/month) for video recording history. Without a subscription, you only get live view and real-time notifications -- no playback of events you missed. Google Nest requires Nest Aware ($6/month) for event history. Eufy and Reolink store recordings locally on their hub or SD card with no subscription required -- this is their main selling point. Quick Replies (Ring, Nest): pre-recorded responses that play automatically if you don't answer in time. "I'll be right there," "Please leave the package at the door," etc. Set up 2--3 of these -- they reduce porch theft because the visitor knows someone is home. Alexa/Google Home integration: if you have smart speakers, connect your doorbell to them. Ring integrates with Alexa -- your Echo speakers announce "Someone is at the front door" when the button is pressed. Nest integrates with Google Home -- Nest Hub Max can show the camera feed automatically.
