Electrical safety:
- •Fuse both battery positive terminals within 18 inches of each battery -- an unfused high-current cable is a fire waiting for a short
- •Modern smart alternators (most vehicles 2015+) require a DC-DC charger, not a solenoid -- verify before buying
- •AGM batteries cannot be installed in sealed, unventilated spaces -- they off-gas hydrogen during charging
- •LiFePO4 batteries require a compatible charger profile -- standard lead-acid chargers can damage them
- •Secure the auxiliary battery to handle off-road shock loads -- a loose battery in a rollover is a crushing hazard
What you'll need
AGM: lower cost, reliable, heavier, good for accessories drawing under 50A. LiFePO4: lighter, deeper cycle capability, faster charge, significantly more expensive. For a first dual battery setup, AGM is the right starting point.
This is the heart of the system. A simple isolator connects batteries so both charge from alternator but isolates them so auxiliary drain doesn't kill the starter battery. A DC-DC charger is smarter -- it charges the auxiliary properly regardless of alternator voltage and protects modern smart alternators.
The auxiliary battery must be secured so it cannot move under any conditions -- rollover, extreme terrain, hard braking. A proper tray bolted to the vehicle is required, not straps alone.
Undersized cables cause voltage drop and heat. For runs over 6 feet from engine bay to bed or cargo area, use 2 AWG or 1 AWG. Use tinned copper marine-grade cable for corrosion resistance.
Each battery cable must be fused at the source battery's positive terminal. A short in the cable without a fuse means battery-fed fire -- no breaker, no shutoff.
