Elliptical Assembly

Elliptical boxes are heavy and the parts are layered. Unbox in your final installation location -- the assembled unit won't fit through a door frame in most cases. Remove everything and lay it out. Most ellipticals have: - Main base frame / ramp assembly - Two side uprights (left and right) - Stride arms (the long pedal arms, usually 2--4 pieces each) - Pedals - Console mast/column - Console/display unit - Flywheel cover - Resistance cable assembly Inventory against the manual's parts list before starting. Missing hardware is most commonly pedal bolts, console bolts, or the safety cable. These are also the parts that cause the most problems if missing.

The base contains the flywheel, resistance mechanism, and crank axle. In most designs, this arrives partially assembled. Locate the crank axle (the horizontal shaft the stride arms connect to). Before attaching anything, apply a thin layer of bearing grease or white lithium grease to the shaft where the stride arms will connect. Attach the stride arms to the crank according to the manual. The left and right arms are offset by 180° (one is forward when the other is back). Incorrectly installing both on the same side creates a machine that can't rotate. Crank bolt torque: The bolts that secure stride arms to the crank are critical. Hand-tighten, then final-torque to manufacturer spec. Under-torqued crank bolts loosen in use, cause lateral wobble, and eventually strip. Attach the rear guide wheels (the wheels that run in the ramp track) to the stride arms if not pre-attached. Check that they spin freely.

The uprights (front left and right columns) connect to the base frame and support the handles and console. With your helper: Position one upright at the front of the base frame. Align the mounting holes and insert the connecting bolts -- do NOT fully tighten. Repeat for the second upright. With both uprights loosely mounted: Check that they're parallel and plumb (vertically straight). Most ellipticals have a spacer or crossbar at the top connecting the two uprights -- install it now. This is what squares the upright assembly. Once the uprights are square: go back and bring all upright-to-base bolts to final torque. Route the resistance cable from the base up through or alongside the uprights to the console position. Do this now, before the console and handle assembly makes it inaccessible.

The handles (moving arms you push and pull while striding) connect to both the uprights and the stride arms. For moving handlebars: The upper handle connects to the upper end of each stride arm via a pivot point. The stride arm threads through a guide on the upright. This guide must be greased -- without it, the stride will squeak and wear prematurely. For fixed handlebars (some ellipticals have both moving and stationary): Mount the stationary handle frame to the uprights first. The moving handlebars attach through the center. Check that the handles move through the full range of motion without binding. Binding usually means a pivot bolt is too tight or a guide wheel is misaligned. Loosen and re-align before proceeding.

The console mounts to the top of the upright assembly. Route the console cable down through the upright column or zip-tie it to the outside. Connect the console cable to the resistance motor, heart rate sensor wires, and speed sensor connections. These are usually color-coded connectors. Level the elliptical: Adjust the leveling feet until the machine sits level side-to-side and front-to-back. Rocking is usually caused by one foot not contacting the floor -- not by an uneven floor. Power on and run through the break-in sequence. Test at several resistance levels. Listen for: - Squeaking (usually dry pivot points or guide wheels -- apply grease) - Clicking (usually a loose crank bolt -- re-torque) - Grinding (misaligned guide wheels -- adjust until they track smoothly in the ramp) Do a 5-minute stride at moderate resistance. Everything that's going to come loose will come loose in the first 5 minutes. Tighten as needed.
