Level 1 charging: your car gains 4 miles overnight. Level 2: your car is full by morning. Level 3: that's not in your garage.
Before you start:
- •240V electrical work requires a permit and licensed electrician in most states. Unpermitted EV charger installs can void homeowner's insurance and create serious issues when selling the home. Geek Handy techs are licensed and pull permits as part of every install.
- •The main breaker does NOT de-energize the service entrance lugs at the top of the panel -- those are always live. Only a utility shutoff or meter pull makes a panel completely safe. Never work above the main breaker.
- •Never undersize wire for an EV charger. It runs at 80% of circuit capacity continuously for hours. 6 AWG is the minimum for a 40A circuit. Undersized wire will overheat.
- •Panel capacity matters. A 100A panel in an older home may not have headroom for a 40A EV circuit without an upgrade. Check total panel load before committing to a charger size.
- •Fire-rated garage walls (between garage and living space) require listed fire-stop fittings at any conduit penetration. Skipping this is a building code violation and a real fire risk.
What you'll need
The materials list depends on your panel, your charger, and your wire run. This is a starting point -- a site assessment will refine it.
Hardwired units deliver more reliability and a cleaner install. If your panel is near the garage, hardwired is worth it. If you move frequently, a NEMA 14-50 plug-in unit with a portable EVSE gives flexibility.
Verify power is off at the circuit before touching any wiring. Non-negotiable. A non-contact tester costs $15 and has saved lives. Use it every time.
A 40A circuit requires 8 AWG minimum, but 6 AWG is better for a run over 20 feet. A 50A circuit requires 6 AWG. Never undersize wire for an EV charger -- it runs at continuous load for hours.
Panel breakers are brand-specific. A Square D breaker will not fit a Siemens panel safely. Identify your panel brand (printed on the door) before buying.
Wire runs in a garage or on an exterior wall should be in conduit for protection. EMT metal conduit is preferred in garages. PVC is fine for underground runs.
For securing the conduit or cable to the wall. A hammer drill is useful if you're going through concrete or masonry to reach the garage from the panel.
