The transducer is mounted directly behind the propeller. At trolling speed: beautiful sonar. At 15 mph: 90% air bubbles and optimism.
Marine installs require marine materials -- no shortcuts:
- •Every hole drilled in the hull needs marine silicone sealant -- unsealed holes cause water intrusion and fiberglass delamination over years.
- •Use tinned marine-grade wire only. Standard automotive wire corrodes in marine environments and fails inside conduit where you can't see it.
- •Ground to the battery negative or ground bus bar -- not the engine block. Improper ground causes stray current corrosion that can eat through aluminum and fiberglass components.
- •In-hull (shoot-through) transducer mounts only work on solid fiberglass hulls -- not aluminum, wood, or cored fiberglass.
- •Always fuse the power circuit within 18 inches of the battery. An unfused wire in a boat bilge environment is a fire risk.
What you'll need
Marine-grade materials throughout -- the marine environment is brutal on standard hardware and wire.
The display unit and transducer must be from the same system or confirmed compatible. Mixing brands usually doesn't work. Match the transducer type to your fishing style -- traditional 2D sonar, CHIRP, or side imaging each require different transducers.
Aluminum screws and generic hardware corrode in marine environments within one season. Use stainless or bronze hardware for anything that contacts water or is exposed to spray.
Standard automotive wire corrodes rapidly in marine environments. Marine-grade wire uses tinned copper strands that resist corrosion. Regular wire will appear to work and then fail quietly inside a conduit where you can't see it.
Every hole drilled in the hull is a potential water entry point. Marine silicone sealant seals the transducer cable entry. Tinned heat-shrink connectors seal electrical connections against moisture and bilge water.
The transducer cable needs to pass through the transom or hull. A clean hole with a grommet is safer than a rough bore. Step bits create clean holes in fiberglass without cracking.
Fish finders draw 1--3A. They must be fused at the source with a 5A or 10A inline fuse. Connecting to an existing marine fuse panel is cleaner than running a separate wire to the battery terminal.
