Before you start:
- •Static discharge is invisible and instant -- it can destroy a $400 GPU before you know it happened. Always wear an anti-static wrist strap clipped to bare metal on the case, or at minimum touch the bare metal case frame before handling any component.
- •Never force a component. RAM, M.2 SSDs, PCIe cards, and CPU cooler brackets all have specific orientations and engagement points. If it doesn't click or seat smoothly, you have the wrong angle, wrong slot, or wrong part.
- •Disconnect the power cable from the wall (not just the power button) before opening the case or touching components. The PSU holds a charge even when the system is off.
- •GPU handling: hold GPUs by the PCIe bracket and the back edge -- never by the fans, never by the heat pipes. The fan blades and heat pipe fins bend easily and are not designed to bear weight.
- •Confirm compatibility before purchasing any component: CPU socket type (LGA1700, AM5, etc.), RAM generation (DDR4 vs DDR5), M.2 slot protocol (NVMe vs SATA), and PCIe version. Incompatible parts will not work and may not be returnable once opened.
- •Never work on carpet. Carpet generates static with every movement, and even an anti-static strap can't fully compensate. Use a hard, flat surface -- a kitchen table or desk.

Case screws are usually #2. M.2 and motherboard screws are often #0 or #1. A single-size driver will strip something important.
Static discharge you can't feel can permanently destroy RAM, CPUs, and GPUs. $6 for peace of mind. Skip it and explain to your wallet later.
Required if installing or reseating a CPU cooler. The included paste on stock coolers is usually adequate for first install; aftermarket coolers often come dry.
For cleaning old thermal paste off the CPU and cooler base before reapplication. Lower concentrations leave residue that defeats the purpose.
For blowing dust out of the case before installing new hardware. Dust causes heat; heat causes failures; failures cause regret.
Tiny screws roll off tables and into carpet dimensions from which they never return. A magnetic tray costs $5 and holds everything in place.
Computer cases are dark inside, connectors are small, and you need both hands free. Your phone flashlight in your mouth is not a strategy.
