Camera Lens Cleaning

Hold the lens up to a bright light source at an angle. Rotate the lens slowly while looking at the front element. You're looking for: Dust: Tiny particles that catch the light. Most dust on the front element does NOT affect image quality -- it would have to be massive to show in photos. The rear element is more sensitive. Fingerprints or smudges: Oily circles that scatter light and cause haze and flare in high-contrast scenes. Fungus: White, web-like or circular growth inside the lens elements. This requires professional disassembly -- do not attempt to clean fungus yourself. Scratches: Fine lines that won't clean away. Minor scratches rarely affect image quality. Deep scratches affect contrast and sharpness. Dust alone on the front element: probably don't clean it. Smudges, fingerprints, oil: clean it. Rule of thumb -- only clean a lens when you can see the contamination affecting your photos.

Never touch a lens surface before blowing and brushing first. Dust particles are abrasive. Wiping a dusty lens moves the particles across the coating like sandpaper. Step 1: Hold the lens face-down (front element pointing at the floor). Use the rocket blower from the side, blowing across the surface. Gravity pulls loosened dust away from the glass. Step 2: Use the lens brush in light circular strokes to sweep remaining particles off the glass. Work from the center outward. Step 3: Blow again to remove anything the brush dislodged. For rear elements: same process, but the rear element is recessed and harder to reach. A smaller blower nozzle or a brush with a longer handle helps.

Apply 1--2 drops of lens cleaning fluid to your lens cloth or tissue. Never apply fluid directly to the lens -- it can seep into the lens barrel and damage internal elements or cause fungus. Wipe technique: Start at the center of the lens and use a gentle circular motion working outward toward the edges. Use minimal pressure -- the fluid does the work. Do not scrub. For stubborn fingerprints: A second pass with a freshly moistened cloth usually handles it. If the oil is baked on from heat exposure, a lens pen's carbon tip applied directly with light circular pressure can break it up. For the rear element: Same technique, but more careful -- the rear element has contact with the camera mount and gets oil from handling more often. Clean it every time you get a new camera body.

After cleaning, hold the lens up to a bright light at an angle again. Rotate slowly and check the entire surface. If you see haze or streaks: Too much fluid, or the cloth had residue on it. Another pass with a barely-damp cloth will clear it. If you see small remaining particles: Another blow-and-brush pass. They're usually dust that settled during the cleaning process. If the smudge is still there after 2--3 passes: It's possible the lens has internal haze (condensation that dried inside the elements) or element separation -- both require professional service. Mount the lens and take a test shot of a high-contrast target (white wall, blue sky) to confirm the cleaning resolved whatever you were seeing in photos.

A clean lens stays clean longer with a few habits: UV filter: A clear UV filter on the front element gives you a sacrificial piece of glass. Cleaning a $30 UV filter is lower stakes than cleaning a $2,000 lens. Fingerprints, rain, and field grime hit the filter instead. Lens caps: Always on when not shooting. Front and rear. The rear cap protects the element closest to the sensor. Storage: Keep lenses in a dry environment. Humidity promotes fungus growth, especially in tropical climates. A dry cabinet or sealed bag with silica gel packets prevents it. Blowing before mounting: Every time you put a lens on the camera, give the rear element a quick blow with the rocket blower. This is the most impactful habit for keeping sensors and rear elements clean.
