The starting battery is in its fifth year. The CCA has declined from 650 to roughly optimism. It started fine in July. It did not start in September.

Before you touch the terminals:

•Always disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal first and reconnect it last -- reversing this sequence risks arcing if the wrench contacts the grounded hull or engine while the positive is connected.
•Wet-cell batteries off-gas hydrogen during charging -- the battery compartment must be ventilated. Hydrogen accumulation in an enclosed space is a fire and explosion risk.
•Starting batteries used as house batteries fail rapidly -- they are not designed for repeated deep discharge cycles. Use a proper deep-cycle or AGM dual-purpose battery for house loads.
•Batteries must be secured against movement in all directions -- ABYC standards require hold-downs that prevent the battery from moving regardless of the boat's orientation in a knockdown.
•LiFePO4 batteries require a compatible battery management system (BMS) and compatible charger -- not all alternators and chargers are LiFePO4 compatible without modification.

Marine batteries are built to handle the vibration, tilt, and repeated deep-discharge cycles that boat use demands. Standard automotive batteries are designed for brief cranking loads only -- they fail quickly in marine house service. AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) is spill-proof and vibration resistant. LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) offers 3-4× the usable capacity per pound and 10× the cycle life but costs more upfront.

Marine battery cables use tinned copper conductors to resist corrosion at the battery terminals, which are one of the highest-moisture and highest-corrosion locations on any boat. Terminal connectors should be tinned ring terminals, crimped with a proper ratcheting crimper and sealed with heat-shrink.

Batteries must be secured against movement in all directions -- a loose battery on a heeled or pounding boat can tip, short against adjacent metal, spill acid (wet cell), or damage itself and surrounding components. ABYC standard and common sense both require secure battery mounting.

A VSR (voltage-sensing relay) automatically connects and disconnects the starting and house batteries during charging. When the alternator charges the battery bank, the VSR connects both banks once the starting battery reaches full voltage, allowing the house bank to charge. Understand house battery vs starting battery -- and whether you need both

Not all boats need dual batteries, and not all battery problems require a full replacement. Understanding the battery's role determines the right solution. Starting (cranking) battery: Designed for one job: providing a large burst of current (200--600+ cold cranking amps) to start the engine. Immediately recharged by the alternator. Never deeply discharged in normal use. Battery type: Can be a standard marine starting battery or AGM. Cheaper starting batteries are acceptable here since they rarely deep cycle. House (deep-cycle) battery: Designed for sustained current delivery over hours. Powers electronics, lights, bilge pumps, refrigeration, VHF, and anything that runs while the engine is off. Regularly discharged to 50% (AGM) or 80% (LiFePO4) and recharged. Battery type: MUST be a true deep-cycle or AGM dual-purpose battery. Starting batteries used as house batteries fail rapidly -- they're not designed for repeated deep discharge. Single battery (small boats): Many small outboard boats have one battery that starts the engine and runs minimal electronics. This works as long as the electronics loads are small and the engine runs regularly. Dual battery setup: Recommended for any boat with electronics that run while anchored or moored. One battery dedicated to starting, one to house loads, with a VSR or battery switch keeping them isolated when the engine isn't running. Replacement timing: Typical marine battery lifespan: 3--5 years for flooded wet cell, 4--7 years for AGM. Signs of failure: slow engine crank, battery not holding charge overnight, visible terminal corrosion, battery case swelling, or battery hydrometer showing low specific gravity in one or more cells.

Pro tip: Load-test a battery before assuming it needs replacement. A battery that "won't charge" may have a parasitic draw (something on the boat draining it). A battery that fails a load test after a full charge needs replacement. A battery low on water in a wet-cell battery just needs distilled water.

Size the battery bank for your actual loads

Buying the right battery requires knowing how much energy you need. A too-small battery bank depletes at anchor before you want it to. A too-large bank costs more and weighs more than necessary. Calculate your daily amp-hour consumption: List each electrical load and estimate daily use: - VHF radio (standby): 0.5A × 24h = 12 Ah - Chartplotter/MFD: 3A × 6h = 18 Ah - Interior lights (LED): 0.5A × 4h = 2 Ah - Bilge pump (auto): 4A × 0.25h = 1 Ah - Refrigerator: 4A × 12h = 48 Ah (varies by insulation and ambient temp) - Running lights: 2A × 4h = 8 Ah Example total: ~89 Ah/day Battery sizing rule: - AGM batteries: Size for 2× daily use to stay above 50% depth of discharge (DoD). 89 Ah/day × 2 = 178 Ah minimum. Round up to a 200 Ah bank. - LiFePO4: Size for 1.25× daily use (80% DoD usable). 89 Ah × 1.25 = ~110 Ah bank achieves the same result with a lighter, smaller bank. Physical space and weight: Group 27 AGM: ~70 Ah to 100 Ah, ~55--65 lbs Group 31 AGM: ~100 Ah to 125 Ah, ~65--75 lbs 100 Ah LiFePO4: ~100 Ah usable, ~25--30 lbs For the same usable capacity: LiFePO4 is roughly 40--50% of the weight of AGM. Significant for performance boats, less relevant for cruisers.

Pro tip: If you're running refrigeration, it's typically the dominant load. Measure your fridge current draw with a clamp meter and multiply by actual daily runtime -- manufacturers' specs are optimistic and based on ideal temperature conditions.

Remove the old battery and prepare the battery compartment

Battery replacement order: disconnect negative first, then positive. Always. Reversing this sequence risks arcing against the boat's grounded hull or engine if your wrench contacts a grounded surface while the positive is disconnected. Removal process: 1. Turn off all electronics and the main battery switch 2. Disconnect the NEGATIVE (black) terminal first -- loosen the terminal bolt and remove the cable 3. Disconnect the POSITIVE (red) terminal 4. Remove any hold-down bracket, strap, or box lid 5. Lift the battery out -- marine batteries are heavy (55--75 lbs for most Group 27/31). Use two hands, keep it level, and have a clear path to set it down. Inspect the battery compartment: - Check for standing water, corrosion residue, or acid staining - Inspect all battery cables for cracked insulation, green corrosion inside the jacket, or damaged terminal ends - If cables show corrosion inside the jacket or any section has become stiff, replace the cables now -- before installing a new battery - Clean the tray with a baking soda and water solution (neutralizes acid residue from wet cell batteries) - Check ventilation: wet-cell batteries off-gas hydrogen during charging. The battery compartment must have ventilation to prevent hydrogen accumulation. AGM and LiFePO4 batteries don't off-gas hydrogen under normal conditions -- they can be installed in unventilated compartments (but verify with the manufacturer for your specific battery).

Pro tip: Photograph all cable connections before disconnecting them. On older boats, cable labels fade or were never there. The photo confirms which cable goes where when the new battery goes in.

Install the new battery and connect terminals

New battery installation follows the reverse sequence of removal: positive first, then negative. Installation: 1. Lower the battery into the tray. Orient it so the positive and negative terminals are accessible and the cables can reach without strain. 2. Secure the hold-down bracket, clamp, or box. The battery must not move. Rock it by hand -- there should be zero play. 3. Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the positive terminal before connecting the cable 4. Connect the POSITIVE (red) terminal first. Tighten the terminal bolt until snug -- don't over-tighten, the post can crack on some battery types 5. Apply dielectric grease to the negative terminal 6. Connect the NEGATIVE (black) terminal 7. Spray both terminals with corrosion inhibitor spray (CRC 03130 or equivalent) Cable terminal inspection: If the existing cable terminals are corroded, green, or show resistance to sliding off the battery post, replace them now. A corroded terminal that's cleaned and reinstalled will re-corrode faster than a new terminal. Budget $20--$40 for new tinned ring terminals and 15 minutes of work. For dual-battery installations: The starting battery connects directly to the engine's starter and alternator. The house battery connects through the VSR or battery switch. The VSR goes between the starting battery positive and the house battery positive -- follow the VSR manufacturer's wiring diagram exactly. Battery switch placement: A 1-2-BOTH-OFF battery switch allows manual selection between starting battery, house battery, or both in parallel. Installed in an accessible location in the main electrical panel area or near the helm.

Pro tip: After connecting terminals, wiggle each cable firmly. A terminal that moves on the post wasn't tightened enough. Loose terminals cause high resistance, voltage drop, and heat -- the symptom shows up as slow cranking even with a good battery.

Dual-battery setup: VSR wiring and charging verification

For boats adding a second (house) battery where only a starting battery existed before: VSR installation wiring: The VSR (voltage-sensing relay) sits between the two battery banks. - VSR input: Starting battery positive terminal (or cable) - VSR output: House battery positive terminal (or cable) - VSR ground: Common DC ground or battery negative bus How it works: - Engine off: VSR open. Starting and house banks isolated. House loads drain house bank without affecting starting battery. - Engine running, alternator charging: When starting battery voltage rises above ~13.3V (charging voltage), the VSR closes. Both banks charge simultaneously from the alternator. - Engine off, starting battery full: If starting battery is at resting voltage (~12.7V), VSR remains open -- no backfeed from starting battery to house loads. Alt wiring: Dual battery switch (1-2-BOTH-OFF): - Position 1: Starting battery only powers engine - Position 2: House battery only (for electronics when engine off) - BOTH: Both banks in parallel. Use for emergency starting if house bank has power but starting battery is depleted - OFF: All power disconnected. Use for storage or service Verifying the dual system: 1. Start engine with switch in position 1 (or via VSR setup) 2. Check alternator voltage: should read 13.5--14.4V with engine running 3. Confirm the house bank voltage is also rising (VSR is connecting the banks) 4. Shut the engine off 5. Switch to house battery position and run electronics -- confirm starting battery voltage holds above 12.5V while house bank powers loads

Pro tip: Label the battery switch positions with laminated card or engraved plate. "Which position starts the engine?" is a question that should not need to be answered while underway in a difficult situation.

Test and maintain

After installation, a series of checks confirms the system is working correctly and the battery is in good health. Initial checks: - Battery voltage at rest: 12.6--12.8V for fully charged AGM/flooded. LiFePO4: 13.2--13.4V at full charge. - Engine starts: Cranks strongly and starts without hesitation - Voltage while engine running: 13.5--14.4V (alternator charging) - Electronics on battery power: voltage should hold above 12.0V under normal load Load test (recommended): A battery that reads 12.6V at rest may still fail under load. Most marine parts stores can perform a load test -- they apply a load equal to the battery's CCA rating for 15 seconds and measure voltage under load. A healthy battery holds above 9.6V during the load test. A failing battery drops lower. Seasonal maintenance: - Clean terminals with baking soda solution once per season or when corrosion appears - Reapply dielectric grease after cleaning - For wet-cell batteries: check water level monthly and top up with distilled water only - Winter storage: Store at full charge. Self-discharge over winter at a rate of 1--3% per month for AGM, 5--10% for flooded wet cell. Connect a trickle/float charger for storage. - Check hold-down bracket each season -- fiberglass trays and brackets can crack from vibration LiFePO4 storage: LiFePO4 batteries should be stored at 50% charge, not full charge. Most LiFePO4 BMS systems handle this automatically -- check your BMS documentation for storage mode.
