Before connecting anything:
- •Fuse the wire between the battery and charge controller within 18 inches of the battery -- an unfused wire in this circuit is a fire risk with no overcurrent protection.
- •Connect the battery to the charge controller BEFORE connecting the panels -- reversing this sequence can damage MPPT controllers.
- •Configure the correct battery chemistry profile in the charge controller -- wrong settings cause overcharge damage to AGM and gel batteries.
- •Do not connect solar directly to LiFePO4 batteries without a compatible charge controller and BMS in place -- thermal runaway is a fire risk.
- •Flexible panels must be installed with an air gap or on breathable fabric -- fully bonded flexible panels trap heat, reducing efficiency and lifespan significantly.
What you'll need
An MPPT charge controller is worth the extra cost over PWM -- the efficiency difference on a limited panel footprint adds up daily.
Marine solar panels are built to withstand UV exposure, saltwater spray, and deck flex. Rigid monocrystalline panels (higher efficiency) work for flat hard surfaces like bimini tops and cabin roofs. Flexible thin-film panels work for curved surfaces like davit arches and bimini fabric.
An MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) charge controller extracts 15--30% more energy from solar panels than a PWM controller, especially in partial shade or at solar panel temperature extremes. On a boat where panel space is limited, MPPT converts more of what you have. Also handles battery chemistry profiles correctly (AGM, LiFePO4, gel).
Solar panels connect via MC4 connectors. The wire between panels and charge controller must be rated for UV exposure and outdoor use -- regular wire insulation cracks in direct sunlight over months. 10 AWG handles 100--200W systems comfortably.
Panel mounts must use stainless or aluminum hardware -- nothing else survives the marine environment. Cable glands (IP67-rated) seal the cable entry points through decks, bimini frames, or cabin roofs without requiring silicone that ages and cracks.
The wire between the charge controller and battery must be fused within 18 inches of the battery. A short in this circuit with no fuse = battery fire. This is not optional. Size the fuse to 1.25x the maximum charge controller output current.
You need to see what the solar system is doing -- watts input, battery voltage, state of charge. Most MPPT controllers include a display. A dedicated battery monitor (Victron BMV-712 or similar) gives more accurate state of charge data and is worth the extra cost if you're relying on solar for extended liveaboard or anchoring.
