Car speakers. One season. The foam surrounds are deteriorating. The cones are blistered from UV. They sound like they're apologizing.
Marine audio is different from car audio:
- •Car stereos are not rated for marine use and fail within one season -- UV, humidity, temperature swings, and moisture intrusion destroy non-marine-rated components.
- •Never install speakers below the waterline regardless of IP rating -- sustained submersion is different from splash resistance.
- •Route RCA signal cables on the opposite side of the boat from power cables -- parallel routing causes alternator whine that persists regardless of grounding quality.
- •Every speaker cutout must be sealed with marine silicone -- water following a wire path into the console interior causes corrosion that's expensive to find and fix.
- •Use only stainless or plastic hardware for speaker mounting -- zinc and steel fasteners rust, stain the gelcoat, and make future removal difficult.

Marine-rated components throughout -- the extra cost over car-grade products is the entire point.
A marine head unit has an IPX5 or higher water resistance rating, UV-resistant controls that don't crack in the sun, and corrosion-resistant internals. Car stereos fail in marine environments within one season -- the moisture and temperature swings are dramatically different.
Standard car speakers have paper cones and foam surrounds that degrade with moisture and UV exposure. Marine speakers use polypropylene cones, rubber surrounds, and stainless or plastic grilles rated for outdoor exposure.
Head unit internal amplifiers are typically 18--22 watts RMS -- adequate for quiet daysailing but insufficient for a pontoon party or open-water background music over wind and wave noise. A dedicated amp dramatically improves volume and clarity.
Speaker wire and power wire in a marine environment must use tinned copper. Standard copper wire oxidizes in marine air and resistance increases, causing power loss and eventual failure. Tinned marine wire maintains conductivity for years.
Every speaker hole and head unit cutout in the boat is a moisture intrusion point. Marine silicone seals the perimeter. Stainless hardware prevents rust stains on the gelcoat and grille corrosion that makes speakers look like they've been in a shipwreck.
