Over-the-Range Microwave Installation
Hanging a 75-lb microwave overhead requires two people, a correctly positioned wall plate, and properly configured venting before you lift it. This is one of the most commonly botched appliance installs -- here's how to do it right.
A Geek handles the full install: wall plate, cabinet routing, venting, and hanging. $99.99.
Two-person job. One person. Microwave is 75 lbs. Currently on the floor. Both mounting holes hit drywall.
Before you start:
- •Over-the-range microwaves weigh 60--90 lbs -- this is a minimum two-person installation, no exceptions
- •Configure the vent direction before mounting -- almost impossible to change after the unit is hung
- •Mount the wall plate into studs -- drywall anchors alone cannot safely support the dynamic load
- •OTR microwaves require a dedicated 20A circuit -- confirm the circuit exists before the installation day
- •Minimum 30" clearance from cooktop surface to the bottom of the microwave is required by most codes
What you'll need
Over-the-range microwaves mount to wall studs and to the bottom of the cabinet above. Stud finder locates the studs; the drill makes the mounting holes. Mounting into studs is mandatory -- drywall anchors alone cannot support 60--90 lbs.
The template shows exact hole locations for the wall plate and cabinet mounting bolts. Using the template correctly is the difference between a properly aligned installation and one you have to redo.
The mounting plate must be level. A microwave that's not level looks wrong from across the kitchen. Transfer template measurements accurately to avoid misaligned holes.
Over-the-range microwaves weigh 60--90 lbs. One person must hold the microwave in position while another person drives the top mounting bolts through the cabinet floor. This is a two-person job minimum.
The microwave's power cord and sometimes a vent duct must pass through the bottom of the cabinet above. Cut only after locating any wiring or shelf hardware in the cabinet.

By the numbers
Hung level. Venting correctly. Done before lunch.
The wall plate goes in studs, the vent is configured before mounting, and two people do the lift. Those three things are what separate a successful install from a callback.
We bring everything and do it right the first time.
