Motorcycle GPS Installation
A properly mounted GPS with clean power wiring and offline maps is invisible when it works -- and invaluable when you need it in a dead zone 200 miles from home.
A Geek mounts it, wires it clean, and configures offline maps before leaving. $149.99.
The cord runs across the tank. Loose. Flapping at 70 mph. Beautiful.
Before you touch the wiring:
- •Route the power cable away from exhaust pipes and hot engine surfaces -- it will melt through in minutes if it contacts heat
- •Leave a steering-head slack loop in the cable -- a cable that binds at full lock will eventually pull a connection loose or damage the GPS
- •Always fuse the power wire within 18 inches of the battery -- a short between the battery and the fuse will create a wiring fire with no protection
- •Download offline maps before your ride -- cell coverage is unreliable in exactly the remote areas where navigation matters most
- •Cheap clamp mounts crack from motorcycle vibration -- RAM or equivalent vibration-absorbing mounts are required for a dedicated GPS
What you'll need
The RAM mount and a proper fuse tap matter more than most people plan for.
Dedicated units are built for gloves -- large buttons, sunlight-readable screens, always-on brightness, and motorcycle-specific routing that avoids highways, tolls, and corners too tight for a loaded bike. Your phone does none of these reliably.
RAM is the industry standard for motorcycle mounts -- rubber ball joints absorb vibration instead of transmitting it directly to the GPS screen. Get the correct arm length for your handlebar position. Cheap clamp mounts crack from engine vibration.
Your GPS needs power for long rides. A SAE connector wired to the battery is the cleanest permanent solution. A weatherproof USB outlet gives flexibility. Either beats hoping the GPS battery lasts your full ride.
Wiring to the battery needs circuit protection. A fuse tap lets you add to an existing fuse slot in the bike's fuse box. The inline fuse protects the new circuit. Without either, a short circuit damages the bike's wiring harness.
The wiring route matters as much as the wire gauge. Zip ties hold the cable to the frame and away from hot pipes and moving parts. Heat-shrink over all connections keeps moisture out. Neither is optional on a motorcycle.
The steps
5 steps. The cable routing in step 4 is where the install goes clean or messy.

By the numbers
Navigation that works where your phone doesn't.
A dedicated motorcycle GPS mounted right is a tool you'll use every ride. A phone on a cheap mount that vibrates loose halfway through Colorado is not.
If the cable is flapping in the wind, the mount keeps loosening, or you want hardwired power from the fuse box -- we'll sort it.
