Before you wire anything:
- •Always wire auxiliary lights through a relay -- running high-current LED loads direct through a handlebar switch melts the switch connectors over time
- •Blue lights are illegal for non-emergency vehicles in virtually every US state -- avoid blue accent lighting in any position visible while riding on public roads
- •Fuse the main power wire within 18 inches of the battery -- an unfused wire that shorts between the battery and the relay creates a wiring fire
- •Check lights at full handlebar lock in both directions and during fork compression -- contact with the front wheel or fender will crack the fender and damage the lights
- •Aim the lights before riding -- driving lights aimed too high blind oncoming traffic and can result in being stopped by law enforcement
What you'll need
The relay and relay harness are the most important components to get right -- don't skip them.
Quality LED auxiliary lights (Denali, Clearwater, or mid-tier alternatives) are far brighter than the stock headlight at a meaningful distance. Cheap LED pods look bright in the garage and dim at 60 mph on a dark road. Match lumen output to your actual use -- highway riding needs throw, not just flood.
LED bars and driving lights draw more current than a handlebar switch is rated for. Running high-current LEDs direct-to-switch melts the switch connectors over time. A relay puts the switch in the low-current trigger circuit and routes battery current through the relay contacts. This is not optional for any light drawing over 5A.
A dedicated switch for the aux lights lets you control them independently from the ignition. Weatherproof rocker switches with IP67 rating are built for handlebar mounting. Standard household switches corrode from road spray within a season.
Most quality auxiliary lights include bracket options for common mounting positions (lower fairing bolt holes, crash bar clamps, fork tube clamps). Using the manufacturer's brackets ensures correct aim and vibration resistance. Fabricated mounts from bent aluminum work but require more effort to aim and secure.
All wiring connections in the relay harness and at the lights must be sealed against weather. Heat-shrink with adhesive lining handles individual connections. Self-amalgamating tape over the relay connector and any junction exposed to rain creates a secondary seal that lasts through seasons.
