Fresh install sounds cathartic. It is -- until you realize it also means wiping your drive, navigating BIOS, dodging the Microsoft account screen, hunting down drivers, and reinstalling everything you had. This guide covers all of it.

Windows 11 requires a TPM 2.0 chip. Your computer has opinions about that.
Before you wipe anything -- read all of these:
- •BACK UP EVERYTHING before you begin. A clean OS install erases the entire drive. Photos, documents, downloads, saved games -- gone. This is not recoverable after the fact. Back up to an external drive or cloud storage and verify the backup before starting.
- •Windows OEM license keys (pre-installed on a PC at purchase) are tied to the original hardware and may not activate after a motherboard replacement. Retail keys are transferable. If you're unsure which you have, check Settings > System > Activation before wiping.
- •Your BIOS must be configured to allow booting from USB. Most modern systems support it but may have it disabled or require a one-time boot menu selection. Enter BIOS at startup (usually Delete, F2, or F12 -- it flashes briefly on screen during POST).
- •Secure Boot must be disabled to install some Linux distributions. It does not need to be disabled for Windows 11 -- in fact, Windows 11 requires Secure Boot to be enabled.
- •Download your motherboard's chipset drivers, LAN drivers, and audio drivers before starting -- save them to a USB drive. After a clean install, Windows Update gets most drivers, but LAN drivers are needed first if you have no internet access immediately post-install.
- •If your laptop has BitLocker enabled, you MUST save your BitLocker recovery key before wiping. Without it, an encrypted drive is permanently inaccessible. Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Device Encryption.

The steps
Ten of them. The install bar will say "almost done" for most of them.

Back up all your data -- this step is not optional
A clean OS install wipes the entire drive. Everything on it. There is no undo, no recycle bin, no recovery after the format completes. If your data isn't backed up before you begin, it won't exist after.
What to back up:
-- Documents, Desktop, Downloads folders
-- Photos and videos (check Pictures library and any camera import folders)
-- Browser bookmarks (export from your browser: Chrome > three-dot menu > Bookmarks > Export; Firefox > Bookmarks menu > Manage Bookmarks > Import/Export)
-- Email data if you use a local client like Outlook or Thunderbird (these store mail in local folders by default -- check your app's backup/export function)
-- Game saves (often in C:\Users\[YourName]\AppData\Roaming\ -- search for the game name; also check cloud saves if you use Steam)
-- Any installed software license keys or activation codes -- write these down now, not after
-- Passwords -- if they're only in your browser, export them or make sure they're synced to a cloud account
Back up method: external hard drive or USB drive is fastest. Cloud (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox) works but takes time. After backing up, open the backup drive and verify the files are actually there and readable -- don't trust a "backup complete" message without checking.
Pro tip: Run Windows Easy Transfer or use a tool like Macrium Reflect to create a full image backup before starting. This lets you restore the entire previous system if something goes wrong, including all files and settings.

Download Windows 11 ISO and create a bootable USB
On a working computer (not the one you're installing on):
Step 1: Go to microsoft.com/software-download/windows11. Download the "Windows 11 Installation Media" option -- this downloads the Media Creation Tool, not the ISO directly. Alternatively, download the ISO directly from the same page (scroll down to "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)").
Step 2: Download Rufus from rufus.ie. It's free, no install required -- just run the .exe.
Step 3: Insert your USB drive (8GB+). All data on it will be erased.
Step 4: Open Rufus. Under "Device," select your USB drive. Under "Boot selection," click SELECT and choose the Windows 11 ISO you downloaded.
Step 5: Partition scheme: choose GPT if your target computer uses UEFI (any computer made after ~2012 almost certainly does). If you're installing on a machine made before 2010 or one that shows "BIOS" not "UEFI," choose MBR.
Step 6: Under "Image option," you may see "Extended Windows 11 Installation (no TPM / no Secure Boot)" -- select this if your computer doesn't meet TPM 2.0 requirements and you want to bypass the check. Standard installation enforces TPM 2.0.
Step 7: Click START. Rufus will warn you that the USB will be erased. Confirm. The process takes 5--15 minutes depending on your USB speed.
When finished, the USB drive is your bootable installer.
Pro tip: Rufus 3.19+ includes a checkbox during Windows 11 setup to 'Remove requirement for 4GB+ RAM, Secure Boot and TPM 2.0' and 'Create a local account.' Both are useful options -- the local account one lets you skip the Microsoft account requirement during setup.

Enter BIOS/UEFI and set USB as the first boot device
The BIOS/UEFI is the firmware that runs before Windows loads. You need to tell it to boot from USB instead of your hard drive.
Step 1: Plug the bootable USB into the computer you're installing Windows on.
Step 2: Restart the computer. As it starts up, repeatedly press the BIOS key -- this flashes on the screen for a moment. Common keys by manufacturer:
-- Dell: F2 or F12
-- HP: Escape (then F9 for boot menu) or F10
-- Lenovo: F1 or F2 (or Novo button on laptops)
-- ASUS: Delete or F2
-- MSI: Delete
-- Gigabyte: Delete
-- ASRock: F2 or Delete
If you miss it, restart and try again. Nobody gets it on the first try.
Step 3: In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot section (often using arrow keys -- BIOS interfaces vary significantly, from outdated text-based to modern graphical). Find "Boot Order" or "Boot Priority."
Step 4: Move your USB drive to the top of the boot order (first priority). On graphical BIOS interfaces, this is often drag-and-drop. On text-based interfaces, use +/- keys or F5/F6.
Step 5: Ensure "Secure Boot" is enabled for Windows 11 (or disabled if installing Linux).
Step 6: Save and exit -- usually F10. The system will restart and boot from the USB.
Alternative shortcut: many systems support a one-time boot menu accessed by pressing F12 (or Escape, or F9) at startup -- this lets you select USB boot without changing the permanent boot order.
Pro tip: If the USB doesn't appear in the boot options, try a different USB port -- preferably a USB 2.0 port (usually black connector) if the USB 3.0 ports (blue) aren't detecting it. Some older BIOS versions don't recognize USB 3.0 drives during boot.

Boot from USB and start the Windows installation
After saving BIOS settings, the computer will restart. You'll see a black screen with "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" or the Windows logo will appear directly. Press a key if prompted.
The Windows Setup screen will load -- this takes 1--2 minutes from a USB 3.0 drive.
Step 1: Select your language, time format, and keyboard layout. Click Next.
Step 2: Click "Install Now."
Step 3: Enter your Windows product key if you have one. If Windows was pre-installed on this machine, click "I don't have a product key" -- Windows will likely activate automatically after installation by detecting the digital license associated with your hardware (stored on Microsoft's servers, linked to your motherboard).
Step 4: Select the Windows edition (Home or Pro). Home is suitable for most users. Pro adds BitLocker, Remote Desktop, and domain join features.
Step 5: Accept the license terms.
Step 6: On the next screen, you'll choose the installation type.
Pro tip: If you see a 'Windows can't be installed on drive X partition Y' error, it usually means the partition format doesn't match. Most commonly: you need to delete all partitions and let Windows create its own (Step 5), or the drive is set to MBR and needs to be GPT (or vice versa) for your BIOS mode.

Choose Custom Install and partition the drive correctly
On the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, you have two options:
-- Upgrade: keeps your existing files and programs, upgrades Windows in place. Only works if Windows is already installed. Not recommended for fixing serious problems or for a fresh start.
-- Custom (advanced): full control over where Windows installs. This is what you want for a clean install.
Click "Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)."
You'll see a list of partitions on your drive(s). For a CLEAN install:
Step 1: Select each existing partition on the drive where Windows will go and click Delete. You may see multiple partitions: a Recovery partition, a System partition (EFI), and the main Windows partition (usually the largest). Delete them all. You'll receive warnings -- confirm each deletion.
After deleting all partitions, you'll see "Drive X Unallocated Space."
Step 2: Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows will automatically create the required partitions (EFI system partition, Microsoft reserved partition, and the main Windows partition) and begin installation.
Do NOT manually create partitions unless you have a specific reason (e.g., dual boot setup). Let Windows create its own.
If you're installing Windows alongside an existing OS (dual boot), DO NOT delete the existing partitions. Instead, use unallocated space or shrink an existing partition -- this is more complex and beyond basic scope.
Pro tip: If you have multiple drives in your system, pay very careful attention to which drive you're partitioning. Selecting the wrong drive and deleting partitions on it will erase that drive. The drive containing your OS will typically show multiple partitions; a blank or second drive will show as a single partition or unallocated space.

Wait for the file copy -- and don't touch anything
Windows will now copy files, expand them, install features, and install updates. This takes 10--30 minutes depending on your drive speed (SSD: 10--15 min, HDD: 20--30 min).
The system will restart several times automatically during this process. Do NOT press any keys during restarts -- if you do, you may boot back into the USB installer instead of continuing the installation.
If the system asks to "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" during a restart, do not press anything. Let it boot from the hard drive automatically.
What you'll see during this phase:
-- "Getting files ready for installation" (file copy)
-- "Installing features" and "Installing updates"
-- Several automatic restarts with a spinning circle
-- "Getting ready" and "Just a moment"
If it appears stuck on any screen for more than 30 minutes, wait another 15 before assuming something is wrong. Large Windows updates during first-time setup can take a while, especially on slower hardware. The progress indicators are sometimes inaccurate.
If it genuinely fails (error code, blue screen, or restart loop): remove the USB, restart, and try again from Step 4. If it fails twice, the ISO may be corrupted -- re-download and re-create the USB.

Complete initial Windows setup -- skip the Microsoft account
Eventually you'll reach the Out of Box Experience (OOBE) setup screens.
Region and keyboard layout: straightforward, select yours.
Network connection: if you're on ethernet, it will connect automatically. If WiFi-only, you'll be prompted to connect. IMPORTANT: if you want to create a local (offline) account instead of a Microsoft account, disconnect from the internet at this screen (unplug ethernet, don't connect to WiFi) and continue. Windows will fall back to local account creation.
Microsoft account screen:
-- If connected to internet: Windows 11 Home forces Microsoft account setup. To bypass: on the account screen, enter a fake email (e.g., a@a.com), click Next, it will fail. Click "Sign-in options" or "Offline account" (this link appears after the error on Home, or go back and look for it).
-- Alternatively, before reaching this screen, open Command Prompt (Shift+F10) and type: oobe\bypassnro -- this restarts setup and adds an "I don't have internet" option.
-- Windows 11 Pro: has a direct "Sign-in options > Domain join instead" path that leads to local account creation.
Create your local username and password. Set security questions.
Privacy settings: go through each toggle. Disable anything you don't explicitly want (location, advertising ID, diagnostic data). These can all be changed later in Settings > Privacy & Security.
Pro tip: After first boot, immediately go to Settings > Windows Update and run all updates before installing anything else. Drivers, security patches, and feature updates will queue up. Some updates require restarts -- let them run. Install everything before adding software.

Install drivers -- in the right order
A clean Windows install has basic Microsoft-provided drivers for most hardware, but manufacturer-specific drivers improve performance and enable full feature sets.
Priority driver installation order:
1. Chipset drivers (most important): download from your motherboard manufacturer's website (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, etc.) or from AMD/Intel directly. Search "[motherboard model] chipset drivers" or "[CPU model] chipset drivers." Install these first -- they allow other drivers to install correctly.
2. GPU drivers: NVIDIA (nvidia.com/Download) or AMD (amd.com/support). Choose GeForce Game Ready or AMD Adrenalin. Don't use the driver that Windows installs automatically -- it's outdated.
3. LAN / WiFi drivers: if your internet is working, Windows likely auto-installed these. If not, use a phone hotspot connection or USB-to-Ethernet adapter to access the internet and download from your motherboard's support page.
4. Audio drivers: Realtek or equivalent -- usually bundled with motherboard driver packages.
5. Peripheral drivers: printers, external drives, gaming peripherals -- download from manufacturer sites.
Run Windows Update again after all drivers are installed -- some driver packages trigger additional update recommendations.
Pro tip: Don't install drivers from third-party 'driver updater' tools. They bundle adware and often install wrong drivers. Always get drivers from the hardware manufacturer's website directly.

Restore your software and files
Now that drivers are handled, reinstall your applications. Start with browsers (Chrome, Firefox), then Microsoft Office or 365, then everything else.
Use Ninite.com for bulk-installing common free software (VLC, 7-Zip, Notepad++, etc.) in one click -- it installs everything silently, skips toolbars and junkware, and saves significant time.
Restore your backed-up files from Step 1. Move them from external drive to their appropriate locations (Documents, Pictures, etc.). Re-import browser bookmarks and check that password sync is working.
For email: if you use Outlook with an Exchange or Microsoft 365 account, just sign in and it re-syncs. If you use a local POP3 setup, you'll need your backup of the Outlook data file (.pst) from Step 1.
For games: Steam, Epic, and most launchers re-download games automatically. If you backed up Steam library folders, you can copy them to the new install and Steam will verify them instead of re-downloading (saves hours on large libraries).
Check that everything you use daily is installed and working before calling this done.
Pro tip: After installing everything, create a system restore point or a full disk image backup (Macrium Reflect Free). You now have a clean, fully configured system. Capturing it here means you can return to this exact state in 15 minutes if anything goes wrong in the future -- instead of doing this whole process again.

Final check -- make sure activation and everything else stuck
Work through this list before declaring victory:
✓ Windows activation: Settings > System > Activation -- should say "Windows is activated with a digital license" or show your product key status. If not activated, try running the Activation troubleshooter or entering your key manually.
✓ All hardware detected: open Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager) and look for yellow triangle warning icons. Any device with a warning needs a driver.
✓ Internet works -- both WiFi and ethernet if applicable
✓ Audio works -- play something, check both speakers and headphone jack
✓ Display resolution is correct (Settings > Display -- should show your monitor's native resolution)
✓ Bluetooth devices pair correctly (if applicable)
✓ Printers are installed and print a test page
✓ All backed-up files are restored and accessible
✓ Run Windows Update one final time and install anything remaining
If Windows won't activate: for OEM licenses tied to your hardware, the digital license should auto-activate within 24 hours when connected to the internet. If it doesn't, use the phone activation option (Settings > Activation > Troubleshoot > "I changed hardware on this device recently").
Pro tip: Set up Windows Backup or a third-party backup schedule now -- while you remember how painful this was. Automated weekly backups to an external drive prevent you from ever needing to do a full reinstall from scratch again.
