Rock Lights Installation
LED rock lights illuminate the terrain under your rig at night. The install is mostly wiring -- but wiring run under the vehicle needs to be done right: protected, fused, and away from heat and moving parts.
A Geek mounts pods, runs the wiring correctly, and has you controlling lights from your phone before we leave. $149.99.
You installed rock lights. You drove on the road. A state trooper had questions about the blue ones.
Before you start:
- •Keep all wiring clear of exhaust -- heat melts wire insulation and conduit, causing shorts
- •Keep wiring away from driveshaft, CV joints, and suspension -- contact is catastrophic
- •Fuse the circuit at the power source -- an unfused rock light wiring harness that shorts can start a fire
- •Check local laws -- some states restrict colored underbody lighting on public roads (blue and red are typically prohibited as they mimic emergency vehicles)
- •Adhesive pod mounts are not suitable for serious off-road -- use bolt-through mounts on the frame
What you'll need
Kits include the pods, wiring harness, and often a Bluetooth controller. RGBW lights let you change colors from an app. White-only lights are brighter per watt.
All under-vehicle wiring must be protected in loom. Exposed wires catch rocks, branches, and mud, causing shorts.
Standard plastic zip ties degrade in UV light and heat under the vehicle. Stainless zip ties are the right choice for permanent under-vehicle installations.
Rock lights should be fused at the power source. Most kits include a fuse, but verify. A relay protects the switch and wiring from high current.
Routing the switch wire into the cab without visible runs requires fishing wire through door pillars or under dash panels.
The steps
Plan pod placement before drilling or mounting anything
Mount pods and protect all wiring in split conduit
Wire to switched power with a fuse and relay
Install the switch or pair the Bluetooth controller
Test, adjust aim, and do a shakedown drive
Installed and controlled from your phone
All 8 pods mounted, wiring protected, Bluetooth controller paired. Done right before we leave.

By the numbers
Light up the trail. Not the wiring loom.
Properly mounted, protected, and fused rock lights look great and last. Improperly wired ones cause shorts, fires, and dark trails.
We know where to run the wire and where not to. That's the whole difference.
