Before you drill the rear wall:
- •A backup camera does not replace looking out the windows and having a spotter. It adds information -- it doesn't replace judgment. Low obstructions and small animals can appear outside the camera field of view.
- •Seal the camera mounting hole and the wire entry point against water. Rear wall penetrations that aren't sealed allow moisture inside the rear wall cavity, which causes delamination and mold over months.
- •Use a T-tap or Posi-Tap to connect to the reverse light wire -- never bare-wire splice an automotive circuit without a proper connector. Bare copper spliced with electrical tape corrodes and causes intermittent failures.
- •Ground the camera to the vehicle chassis, not to the RV's 12V system negative bus. Camera ground loops cause image noise (rolling lines on the display). Chassis ground at a clean metal point eliminates this.
What you'll need
Wide angle and night vision are the two specs that matter most for an RV backup camera. Standard car camera specs are not enough.
RVs require a significantly wider field of view than car backup cameras -- you need at least 120 degrees, and 150 degrees is better for Class A and fifth wheel rigs. Night vision (infrared LEDs) is essential because you're often backing into sites after dark. Wired cameras (Furrion, Haloview wired) give a stable signal. Wireless systems (Furrion DV7900, Haloview RD7, Garmin BC 50) are easier to install but can suffer interference from nearby vehicles. Good wireless systems on 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz bands work reliably for most RVs.
A dedicated 5"--7" monitor mounts on the dash and is always visible. A mirror monitor replaces or clips over the existing rearview mirror and looks factory-installed. For motorhomes (no usable rearview mirror anyway), a dash monitor makes more sense. For fifth wheels and travel trailers towed by a truck, a mirror monitor keeps your existing mirror function while adding the camera feed.
The camera's 12V power comes from either the reverse light wire (camera activates when reverse gear is engaged) or a constant-on 12V source (camera is always available). For an always-on camera useful when maneuvering forward in tight spots, tap a constant 12V source through a 5A add-a-circuit fuse tap at the fuse box.
Mounting the camera at the center top of the rear wall requires drilling a small hole for camera wiring. On most RVs this goes through the rear wall (fiberglass or aluminum) into an interior area where you can route the wire. A step bit drills clean holes in thin metal or fiberglass. A hole saw cuts larger openings for grommeted wire entry points.
Camera wiring runs the length of the RV in many installations -- from the rear camera to the cab monitor. Wire loom (split-tube sleeving) protects the wire run from abrasion and UV along the exterior. A weatherproof butt connector or Posi-Tap splice at the power connection prevents corrosion at outdoor wire joints. A rubber grommet at every wall penetration protects the wire from chafing on sharp edges.
