Before you touch the roof:
- •Every roof penetration -- bolt holes, cable entry -- MUST be sealed with Dicor lap sealant. No exceptions. Unsealed holes allow water in, and water damage in RV walls and ceilings is catastrophic and invisible until it is too late.
- •Do not aim the dish while standing on the roof of a moving or even slightly rocking RV. The dish gets aimed with the RV fully level and stationary.
- •Coax connectors must be properly crimped or compressed. A loose F-connector on the satellite coax causes signal drop-out that looks exactly like a dish aiming problem. Inspect both ends of every coax before blaming the dish.
- •Do not run satellite service at the same time as an over-the-air antenna without a signal combiner/splitter rated for both. The satellite coax and antenna coax go to different inputs -- they do not share a single cable.
- •Satellite receivers draw 20--30W of constant power. Running one on an inverter while boondocking without solar or a generator will drain a standard 100Ah RV battery in 3--4 hours. Plan your power budget accordingly.

The Dicor lap sealant is not optional -- it is what separates a lasting install from a water damage claim.
Automatic domes (Dish Tailgater, King Dome, Winegard Pathway) find the satellite themselves after you power them on. You point them roughly south, hit a button, and they acquire signal in 1--3 minutes. Manual dishes are cheaper but require you to physically aim them using a signal meter app. For full-timers and frequent travelers, automatic is worth the price difference. For occasional use, a manual portable dish is fine.
The mount goes through the roof membrane and into the roof decking. RV roofs are typically 1/2" plywood or Luan over aluminum framing. You need lag bolts long enough to hit solid structure, a backing plate on the underside to spread the load, and a base designed for RV roof curvature. Never mount only into the membrane layer.
This is the most important item on the list. Every penetration through the RV roof membrane -- lag bolt holes, cable entry points, and the base perimeter -- must be sealed with Dicor lap sealant. Water intrusion through an unsealed roof penetration causes rot, delamination, and mold that costs thousands to repair. Dicor self-leveling formula flows into seams; the non-sag formula is for vertical surfaces.
Do not drill a bare hole through the roof for coax. An RV cable entry fitting is a weatherproof boot that mounts flush with the roof, routes the coax through a sealed fitting, and provides a strain relief point. The coax enters the RV at the fitting; the fitting perimeter gets lapped with Dicor. This is the right way to do the penetration.
RG-6 is the correct coax spec for satellite signal runs. RG-59 has too much loss at the frequencies satellite uses and causes signal problems over longer runs. Use compression-style F-connectors, not crimp-style, for coax ends you terminate yourself -- they seal better and hold more reliably against vibration.
