The dish is mounted. Obstruction check: 94% sky view. One large pine tree to the north. Starlink satellite coverage is polar orbit. Polar means north. This is a problem.
Before you mount or route anything:
- •Do not cut, splice, or modify the Starlink cable. The cable has specific shielding and the connectors are proprietary -- any modification voids the warranty and damages the signal integrity.
- •Roof-mounted dishes must be removed or retracted before traveling through areas with height restrictions. The dish adds 4--8 inches to RV height depending on mount style. Know your RV's clearance height with the dish mounted.
- •All roof penetrations for the Starlink cable must use a flat cable entry fitting and be sealed with Dicor. A bare hole through the roof membrane causes water intrusion regardless of how much sealant you apply around it.
- •Starlink in-motion mode requires the flat high-performance dish -- the standard round or square dish will not maintain connection while the vehicle is moving, regardless of plan or settings.
- •The Starlink router runs warm. Do not enclose it in a sealed cabinet without ventilation. Overheating causes the router to throttle performance and, in extreme cases, shut down.
What you'll need
The flat cable entry fitting is the piece most people forget and the one that determines whether the cable routing is clean or a compromise.
The dish choice determines whether you can use Starlink while driving (in-motion mode). The flat high-performance (HP) Gen 3 dish supports in-motion mode and mounts flush to the roof. The standard dish (round or square) is designed for stationary use only. For RVers who park and stay put, either works. For those who want internet while rolling down the highway, the flat HP dish is the one to buy -- it requires a roof mount but supports highway speeds.
Starlink sells a roof mount adapter that works with their dish, or you can fabricate a mount using standard pipe fittings. For permanent roof installation, a low-profile mount positions the dish flat on the roof and requires a roof penetration for the cable. For tripod/temporary use, a 1.5" pipe tripod adapter lets you set up on the ground outside the RV. The pipe adapter is the right choice if you want flexibility -- roof mount if you want in-motion or never want to set up a tripod.
The Starlink cable is proprietary and about 75 feet long with a non-removable connector on each end. Routing it through the roof requires a flat cable entry fitting -- a slim, weatherproof channel that accommodates the flat Starlink cable without crushing it. Standard round cable entry fittings will not work. The Starlink flat cable entry kit from third-party vendors (RVupgrades, Amazon) is the right hardware. All roof penetrations get Dicor sealant.
The Starlink router that ships with the dish is functional but has limited range. For a large RV (30+ feet), the router placed in the front may not reach the rear bedroom. A mesh WiFi system (TP-Link Deco, Eero, or GL.iNet travel routers in mesh mode) extends coverage throughout the rig without dead spots. Alternatively, place the Starlink router near the center of the RV -- the cable is 75 feet long, so you have flexibility.
The Starlink dish and router run on 120V AC. When boondocking without shore power, you need an inverter to power the system. The dish draws 15--50W depending on the model (Gen 3 HP draws more). A 300W pure sine inverter is sufficient to run only the Starlink system. The third-party Starlink DC power cable (Mobility) eliminates the need for an inverter by running the dish directly from 12V DC.
