The TV is mounted on the slide wall. The cable length is perfect when the slide is in. It's not perfect when the slide is out.
Before you drill anything:
- •Mount only into confirmed wall studs. RV paneling and foam alone cannot support a TV under road vibration -- the TV will fall.
- •Lower the roof antenna before driving. An extended crank antenna hits bridges, awnings, and campground obstacles and snaps off with zero warning.
- •A 120V TV running on an inverter while boondocking will drain a 100Ah battery in under 2 hours. Use a 12V TV or have shore power.
- •Never route power cables over sharp metal edges without a protective grommet. Vibration causes chafing -- a chafed wire in an RV wall is a fire risk.
- •On slide-out walls, leave 18" of cable slack at the TV -- not 6". The slide moves more than you expect, and a taut HDMI cable is the first thing that fails.
What you'll need
RV-rated mounts and 12V TVs are the right spec -- standard home products don't handle vehicle vibration.
A 12V TV runs directly off your coach battery system without an inverter. Standard 120V TVs work but require the inverter running constantly, which drains the battery bank and adds noise. Look for brands like Supersonic, Jensen, or Furrion -- they are built to handle RV vibration and the 12V electrical system.
Standard home TV mounts are not designed for vehicle vibration. RV-rated mounts use locking mechanisms that prevent the TV from bouncing off the mount while driving. A swivel mount lets you angle the TV for viewing from the dinette, bedroom, or sofa -- worth the few extra dollars.
RV walls are thin -- often 1/4" luan paneling over 1" foam with a thin aluminum exterior skin. Standard drywall anchors fail completely in RV walls under vibration. You must mount into the wall studs (typically aluminum or wood, 16" on center). A stud finder (or careful probing) is required -- guessing costs you a TV.
For running a dedicated 12V circuit to the TV. Stranded wire (not solid) handles vibration without fatiguing and cracking. Fuse the circuit within 18 inches of the battery or DC distribution panel with a 15A inline fuse.
HDMI cables, antenna coax, and power wires all need to run along the wall in an RV. Surface-mount cable raceways (plastic channels with adhesive backing) keep cables from flopping loose and rattling during travel. They also look clean.
