Before you buy anything:
- •Do not drill antenna cable entry holes without a proper weatherproof cable entry fitting and Dicor sealant. Bare holes through the RV roof or wall cause water intrusion.
- •Campground WiFi is a public network -- do not enter banking credentials, passwords, or sensitive information without a VPN active.
- •A phone used as a hotspot is not a substitute for a dedicated router if you need reliable internet -- the phone overheats, the battery drains, and the hotspot disconnects when you get a call.
- •LTE band locking incorrectly can drop you from a working connection to no connection. Always test with a band unlocked fallback before committing to a locked configuration.
What you'll need
A cellular router with an external MIMO antenna covers 90% of situations. The campground WiFi booster is a cheap addition that pays for itself quickly.
A cellular router is not a phone hotspot. It accepts a standard SIM card, manages carrier connections continuously, and broadcasts a stable WiFi network throughout the RV. The Pepwave BR1 Mini is the gold standard for serious travelers -- it handles band locking, carrier switching, and external antenna connections. The Netgear M6 is a solid mid-range option. The GL.iNet Spitz is affordable and supports external antennas through SMA connectors.
The difference between the cellular router's internal antenna and a good external antenna mounted outside the RV can be 10--20dB of signal -- the difference between 1 bar and 4 bars, or no usable connection and streaming video. MIMO antennas (2x2 or 4x4) are required for modern LTE/5G. Look for antennas with N-connector or SMA connectors that match your router.
A WiFi extender connects to campground WiFi as a client and rebroadcasts it as your own private WiFi network inside the RV. Without one, you're fighting everyone else for the campground access point signal. A small travel router like the GL.iNet Mango ($30) sits in a window, connects to the campground network, and gives your whole RV its own local network. Pair it with a directional outdoor antenna for distant access points.
US carrier performance varies dramatically by region. T-Mobile has stronger rural coverage in the West; Verizon is more reliable in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Many full-timers run two SIMs (T-Mobile + Verizon) in a dual-SIM router for failover. Consider RV-specific data plans: Visible (Verizon network), T-Mobile Home Internet SIM (requires careful T&Cs reading), or dedicated IoT/RV data plans from carriers.
The cable between your external antenna and router matters a lot. Standard RG-58 loses so much signal over 10 feet that you give back most of what the external antenna gained. LMR-240 is flexible and lower-loss, suitable for runs under 15 feet. LMR-400 for longer runs. Use the shortest run possible with the correct connector type for your router's antenna port (usually SMA or N-type).
