Before you start:
- •Laptop screen replacement voids the warranty on most major brands -- check yours before you touch a screw.
- •Order your replacement screen by the exact part number printed on the back of the current panel (e.g. LP133WF4-SPB1) -- not just '13-inch laptop screen.' Wrong panel = wrong connector, wrong resolution, wrong backlight voltage.
- •OLED screens are roughly 3x more fragile than IPS panels during handling. If your laptop has OLED, treat the replacement like a raw egg.
- •Disconnect the battery before any disassembly. One accidental short during a screen swap can kill the motherboard.
- •Screen flex cables tear easily and connectors snap with almost no force. Pull the tab on the connector -- never the cable wire itself.
- •Tablets -- especially iPads -- are glued shut and require a heat gun to soften adhesive. The process is significantly harder than laptop screens and the margin for error is much smaller.

Decide if the repair makes financial sense
Before ordering anything, do the math. -- Find the current resale value of your laptop on eBay (filter: sold listings, same model, working condition). -- Find the replacement screen price for your exact model (see Step 2). -- If screen cost + your time > 50% of resale value, a repair may not be worth it financially. A cracked screen on a 7-year-old budget laptop may not be worth repairing. A cracked screen on a 2-year-old premium laptop almost certainly is. Also consider: is the crack cosmetic only, or is the display bleeding, flickering, or showing dead zones? Cosmetic cracks sometimes stay stable for months. Active damage spreads.
Find your exact replacement screen by model number
Flip your laptop over. Find the model number on the bottom sticker -- it looks like 'HP 15-dy2xxx' or 'Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2' or similar. Now search that exact model on: -- iFixit.com (ifixit.com/Device/Laptop) -- has guides AND part links -- YouTube: search '[your model] screen replacement' -- watch the full video before buying anything Once inside the machine, the panel itself has a part number printed on the back (e.g. LP133WF4, B140HAN04.0). That number is the definitive match. If you can access it before ordering, use it. Buy from reputable suppliers: iFixit, Screen Country, LaptopScreen.com. Avoid no-name eBay listings with zero reviews.
Power off completely and disconnect the battery
Shut down fully -- not sleep, not hibernate. Full power off. For laptops with a removable battery: flip over, slide the latch, remove the battery pack. For laptops with an internal battery: you'll need to open the bottom panel first (usually Phillips screws around the perimeter -- check for screws hidden under rubber feet). Once inside, locate the battery connector on the motherboard and gently unplug it before doing anything else. Leave the laptop unplugged from AC power the entire time. Ground yourself before handling components -- touch a metal part of the chassis or use an anti-static wrist strap if you have one.
Open the display bezel
The bezel (the plastic frame around the screen) is held on by clips -- usually one every 2-3 inches around the perimeter. There is no adhesive on most laptops. Start at a bottom corner. Insert your plastic pry tool (not metal -- never metal) into the seam between the bezel and the lid. Gently work around the perimeter, releasing clips as you go. You'll hear small clicks as each clip releases. Common failure points: -- Top corners near the webcam are the tightest -- go slow -- Some bezels have 1-2 hidden screws under rubber plugs at the bottom -- pry those plugs out first -- Don't lever against the screen itself, only against the lid shell The bezel should lift off cleanly. Set it aside on a soft surface face-down.
Disconnect the LVDS / eDP cable
With the bezel off, you'll see the screen panel held to the lid by 2-4 screws (usually Phillips or Torx) on metal brackets at the sides or corners. Remove these screws and keep them in a small dish -- they're easy to lose. Tilt the top of the panel forward (away from the lid) so it lays face-down on the keyboard. You'll see the video cable attached to the back. There are two connector styles: -- Tab-lock connector: a strip of tape or a small tab holds the connector in place. Lift the tab, then pull the connector straight out -- never at an angle. -- No-tab connector: just pull straight out from the socket. The cable is fragile. The connector is fragile. Pull from the connector body only, not the wire. A torn cable means ordering a new cable before you can finish.
Install the new screen and TEST before reassembling
This step is critical: test the new screen before snapping the bezel back on. -- Connect the eDP/LVDS cable to the new panel (it should click in firmly). -- Set the panel in the lid (don't screw it down yet -- just rest it in place). -- Reconnect the battery connector. -- Power on the laptop. Look for: -- Full image displayed (not black, not flickering) -- Correct resolution and brightness -- No dead pixels or backlight bleed at edges -- Correct color (no pink/yellow tint that wasn't there before) If it looks good, power off, disconnect battery again, then screw the panel brackets back in and snap the bezel on starting from the top edge and working around. If something looks wrong: power off immediately and re-seat the cable connector before assuming the screen is defective.
Reassemble and confirm hinges and lid sensor work
With the bezel reinstalled, reattach the bottom panel (or battery) and power on fully. Check: -- Open and close the lid through full range -- hinges should move smoothly with no grinding -- Lid close should trigger sleep mode (tests the magnetic sensor) -- Screen brightness controls work (Fn + brightness keys) -- Webcam works if equipped (open Camera app) If the lid sensor doesn't trigger sleep when closed, the magnet in the bezel may be seated incorrectly -- check that the bezel is fully clipped down at all points. Run the laptop for 30 minutes under normal use and confirm no flickering develops under warmth. Some cable connections look fine at rest but lose contact when the panel heats up.
