Shouldn't your house just work? Without a degree in networking?
Before you start:
- •Ecosystem lock-in is real: Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa devices are not always interchangeable. Buy Matter-certified devices when possible to future-proof.
- •Smart home devices add load to your router -- 20+ devices on an underpowered router will cause dropped connections and automation failures. Consider a mesh Wi-Fi upgrade first.
- •Do not set automations involving door locks or security systems until you've verified the device's failure mode: what happens when the hub is offline? The lock should fail secure (stay locked), not fail open.
- •Cloud-dependent devices stop working when the manufacturer discontinues the service. Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread devices work locally and survive cloud shutdowns. Wi-Fi devices from startup companies are the highest risk.
- •2.4 GHz pairing issues are the number one smart home setup failure. Confirm your phone is on 2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz) before starting the pairing process for any Wi-Fi device.
- •Do NOT connect smart home devices to a guest network or network with client isolation enabled -- most hub-to-device communication requires devices to be on the same subnet.
What you'll need

The brain of your system. Everything else talks to this. Choosing wrong here is expensive.
Most smart home devices use 2.4 GHz. If your router only shows one network, check settings. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices don't use Wi-Fi at all -- the hub handles those.
Wire your hub directly to the router. Wi-Fi hubs introduce latency and can lose connection mid-automation. Wired = reliable.
Matter devices that use Thread need a border router -- Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), or Amazon Echo (4th gen) all serve as one. Without it, Thread devices won't connect.
Label every device as you add it: location, protocol (Zigbee/Z-Wave/Wi-Fi/Thread), date added. You will forget. Everyone forgets.

Every hub has a companion app. Some require Bluetooth for initial pairing even if the device ultimately runs on Zigbee. Keep your phone nearby.
