Smart Lock Installation

Most smart lock installation failures start at the store, not the door. Check these before ordering: Backset: the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the deadbolt cylinder. Standard US backsets are 2-3/8" (common on interior and older exterior doors) or 2-3/4" (most common on newer exterior doors). Measure yours by looking at the existing deadbolt from the door edge to the center of the keyhole. Most smart locks support both backsets (they include a spacer), but verify in the spec sheet. Bore hole diameter: the round hole the lock cylinder passes through. Standard US bore is 2-1/8". If your door has a 1-1/2" bore (common on older homes), you'll need an adapter plate or a different lock model. Door thickness: standard door thickness is 1-3/8" to 1-3/4". Most smart locks cover this range. Extra-thick doors (1-7/8" or more) require a specific lock or an extension kit. Door material: smart locks work on wood and most metal doors. Fiberglass doors typically work too. If your door has a foam core (common on some older steel doors), confirm the deadbolt throw won't hit the foam in extended position. Existing deadbolt brand: if you're considering a lock that uses your existing exterior keyway (so the same key works on your door lock and the deadbolt), look for "SmartKey" compatibility or check if your lock brand offers a compatible smart deadbolt that uses the existing cylinder.

Most existing deadbolts come apart in 10 minutes. Here's the sequence: 1. Open the door. The lock works more easily when the bolt is retracted and the door is open. 2. From the interior side: find the two long screws that go through the interior assembly into the exterior assembly. Remove both. On some locks, these are concealed under a trim ring -- pry the ring off first with a flathead screwdriver. 3. Pull the interior assembly off the door (the thumb-turn side). 4. The exterior assembly (the keyed side) will come off from outside once the interior is removed -- or may require a slight push from the other side. 5. Remove the deadbolt itself: this is the cylinder and throw mechanism that sits in the edge of the door, held by two screws on the door edge face plate. Remove the face plate screws and slide the deadbolt out. Inspect what's left: you should now see two holes in the door -- the large bore hole (front to back, where the lock cylinders sat) and the edge hole (where the deadbolt sat). These should match your new lock's requirements. Inspect the strike plate on the door frame: this is the metal plate with a hole that the deadbolt extends into. If it's in good shape and the hole is the right size for your new deadbolt throw, you can leave it. If the mortise (the routed pocket behind the strike plate) is too small, you'll need to expand it.

With the old lock out, check that the bore holes match your new lock's requirements: Bore hole (2-1/8"): insert a 2-1/8" hole saw into the existing hole as a test fit. If it drops in, you're good. If the hole is smaller (1-1/2" or 1-3/4"), you need to enlarge it with a 2-1/8" hole saw -- this is common on older doors. Edge hole and mortise: the deadbolt slot in the door edge is typically 1" in diameter. Your new lock should fit it. The face plate (the metal plate on the door edge that covers the bolt opening) may or may not match -- if it doesn't, you'll need to chisel the mortise slightly wider to fit the new face plate. Strike plate check: your new lock's deadbolt may be slightly longer (1" throw is standard, but 1-1/2" is better security). If the throw is longer, make sure the existing strike plate hole and mortise in the frame can accommodate it. Most smart locks use a standard 1" throw and are fine with existing strike plates. If you need to chisel: mark the outline of the new mortise on the door face/frame, score with a sharp chisel, work carefully in passes. A sharp chisel on wood grain is far more controllable than a dull one -- sharpen it first. Check door alignment: close the door and confirm the bolt aligns with the strike plate hole when you manually push it in. If the door has settled or warped, the bolt may be slightly high or low -- you may need to adjust the strike plate position.

The deadbolt mechanism goes in first, before the lock bodies. 1. Orient the deadbolt correctly: most have a directional indicator (arrow or mark) showing which way faces up or which direction the door swings. Check the instructions. 2. Slide the deadbolt into the edge hole with the face plate aligned over the mortise. 3. Drive the two face plate screws in firmly but don't over-torque -- these go into the door edge and the wood can split if you force them. 4. Test: turn the deadbolt tailpiece (the square metal bar that sticks out from the bolt) by hand. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly. If it's stiff or catches, the bolt may be misaligned with the edge hole -- adjust before proceeding. The deadbolt tailpiece is what the lock body engages to operate the throw. When you install the interior assembly, its cam or tailpiece slot will connect to this. Get the deadbolt moving freely now because diagnosing it with both lock bodies installed is harder.

The exterior assembly is the keypad or fingerprint side -- the face of the lock visible from outside. 1. From outside, slide the exterior assembly through the bore hole. The connecting cable and/or tailpiece should extend through to the interior side. 2. On many smart locks, the exterior assembly has a connector cable that plugs into the interior assembly for power and signal. Have that cable ready to connect as you install the interior side. 3. Make sure the tailpiece on the exterior assembly engages with the deadbolt tailpiece. You'll feel it click or align. 4. Don't fully tighten anything yet -- just get it seated and aligned. Orientation: the exterior keypad should face outward and be right-side up. Sounds obvious until you're holding a $200 lock upside down trying to thread screws through a door in the dark. Most smart locks are handed (left-hand or right-hand) based on which side the hinge is on and which way the door swings. Check the box -- many locks are adjustable, but some are not. If you ordered the wrong hand, you'll know now, not at the end.

The interior assembly contains the battery pack and the circuit board for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, or Z-Wave (depending on your lock model). 1. Connect any cable coming through from the exterior assembly to the interior assembly's port. This is usually a small white or black JST connector. It should click in firmly. 2. Align the interior assembly so the long mounting screws pass through it and thread into the exterior assembly or into nuts on the door's far side. 3. Thread the long screws by hand to ensure they're not cross-threading. Then tighten with a Phillips screwdriver. 4. Tighten firmly but not excessively -- the lock body should be flush against the door with no gap, but the screws don't need to be cranked hard. Over-tightening can warp the assembly and make the lock stiff to operate. Test operation before inserting batteries: manually operate the thumb-turn from the inside. The bolt should extend and retract smoothly with no catching. If it's stiff, back the mounting screws off slightly -- they may be binding the mechanism. Insert batteries: most locks take 4--8 AA batteries in the interior assembly. Insert them per the diagram inside the battery compartment. The lock should power on immediately (beep or LED flash).

Every smart lock brand has a different pairing process. The general steps: 1. Download the companion app: Schlage Home, Yale Access, Kwikset app, or Ultraloq. Create an account if needed. 2. Follow the in-app add device flow. This typically involves: pressing a button on the lock, scanning a QR code on the lock body (usually inside the battery compartment or on the back of the lock), or entering a serial number. 3. Connection types: - Wi-Fi built-in (Schlage Encode, Kwikset Halo): connects directly to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. During setup, you'll enter your Wi-Fi password in the app and it'll push it to the lock. - Bluetooth-only (Ultraloq): range is limited to ~30 feet. Good if you only need to control it when you're home or very close. - Z-Wave or Zigbee (Yale Assure with Z-Wave module, Schlage BE469): requires a compatible hub (SmartThings, Home Assistant, etc.). Pair by putting the hub in discovery mode and pressing a button on the lock per manufacturer instructions. - Wi-Fi via bridge (some Yale models): lock uses Bluetooth, bridge device plugs into outlet and provides Wi-Fi connectivity. After pairing, test remote operation: while standing at the door, lock and unlock from the app. Then move away from the door (go to another room or outside) and repeat. Verify the lock status updates in the app when you physically turn the thumb-turn. If using a smart home hub (SmartThings, Apple Home, Google Home): add the lock to your hub after pairing to the manufacturer app. Most platforms support smart locks via Works With SmartThings, HomeKit, or Google Home integrations.

A smart lock without configured PINs is just an expensive lock. Take 10 minutes to set this up properly. Master PIN / programming code: set or change this in the app. This is used to add/remove user PINs physically at the keypad without the app. Choose something you can remember but that isn't obvious (not 1234, not your address). User PINs: create separate PIN codes for: - Household members (you, your partner, kids) - Recurring guests (house cleaner, dog walker, contractor) - Temporary access (visiting family -- set an expiration date) Access scheduling: most smart locks let you assign each PIN code a schedule. A house cleaner's code can be valid only on Tuesdays between 9am and 5pm. A contractor's code can expire on a specific date. Use this. Auto-lock: set your desired auto-lock delay. Common useful settings: 30 seconds (if you're always walking in and not wanting to manually lock), 1 minute, 5 minutes. Most smart locks default to 30 seconds, which some people find too aggressive. Adjust in the app. Notifications: turn on lock/unlock notifications. You'll get a push alert every time the door locks or unlocks, with the user name if it was via PIN. This is the entire point of a smart lock -- you'll know who came and went, when. Lock history: verify the app shows an event log. Most modern smart locks maintain 30--100 events locally and sync to the app.

Before you rely on this lock as your only door entry, confirm every access method works. App unlock: lock the door, leave your keys inside, and unlock it from the app. Confirm it works before making this a habit. Keypad: enter your PIN at the keypad. Confirm the bolt retracts. Enter an incorrect PIN several times -- confirm the lock enters lockout mode as expected (most lock for 30--60 seconds after 5 bad attempts). Physical key: most smart lock deadbolts include a key cylinder on the exterior (for emergency access). Test the included key. Store the key somewhere that isn't inside the house. Spare keys left inside the locked house don't help much. Backup battery: some smart locks have a 9V battery contact on the exterior for emergency power if the internal batteries die. Test this by holding a fresh 9V to the contacts and verifying the keypad activates. Know where this is before you need it. Low battery warning: drain your battery or check the app to confirm low-battery alerts work. Most locks notify you in the app at 20% and at 10% battery. What to do if the app loses connection: most smart locks operate locally -- keypad PINs always work regardless of internet or app connectivity. The app just provides remote control and access logs. If the cloud service is down, local access still works.
