Solar Monitoring Setup

Solar monitoring starts at the inverter. Every major inverter brand has its own monitoring portal: - Enphase microinverters → Enphase Enlighten (enlighten.enphaseenergy.com) - SolarEdge → SolarEdge monitoring portal (monitoring.solaredge.com) - SMA → SMA Sunny Portal - Fronius → Fronius Solar.web - Tesla Solar → Tesla app The inverter (or the Envoy gateway for Enphase systems) connects to your home WiFi. If your inverter is in the garage or utility room and WiFi is weak there, you may need a WiFi extender or a powerline Ethernet adapter to get the inverter online. Setup process: 1. Download the manufacturer app 2. Create an account or log into an existing account 3. The installer typically sets this up during commissioning -- if they didn't, follow the inverter's manual for "commissioning" or "network setup" 4. For Enphase: the Envoy device has a local web page at enlighten.local or at the device's IP address -- follow the Enphase commissioning guide Once connected: monitoring data typically shows up within 15--30 minutes of the system connecting. Historical data from the installation date onwards should populate.

Most monitoring dashboards show multiple data streams. Understanding which is which is critical for diagnosing issues: Production: How much power the solar panels are generating right now (kW) and today/this month/this year (kWh). This should be positive whenever the sun is shining. Consumption: How much power your home is using right now. Requires current transformers (CT clamps) installed in the electrical panel -- not all systems have this. Net import/export: How much you're pulling from the grid (positive) or sending to the grid (negative). If you're exporting during the middle of a sunny day, the system is working correctly. Battery state (if applicable): Current charge level, whether charging or discharging, and how much power the battery is currently contributing. The single most important number: Annual production in kWh vs what was estimated at installation. If your system was sold as "10,000 kWh/year" and it's producing 7,000 kWh after 12 months, something is wrong -- underperforming panels, a shading issue, or inverter problem.

Most inverter monitoring platforms support email or push notification alerts for: - Inverter offline (not communicating) - Microinverter fault (specific panel or microinverter not producing) - Grid connection issue - Production below expected threshold Enable all of these alerts. The most common failure mode for solar systems is that a single microinverter or string fails silently, production drops by 5--15%, and nobody notices for months because the system still mostly works. For Enphase systems: Enlighten sends an alert when any microinverter reports a fault. You can also see each panel's individual production on the home map view -- a panel that looks dark or shows 0W when neighbors are producing normally is the failed unit. For string inverter systems (SolarEdge, SMA, Fronius): Individual panel monitoring requires power optimizers (SolarEdge) or module-level monitoring. Without these, you see total string production -- a single failed panel reduces total production but doesn't trigger a specific panel alert. Platform alert setup: Usually in Settings → Notifications or Alerts in the monitoring portal.

If your system is producing less than expected, work through these in order: 1. Check the date and weather: Compare sunny days in the current month to the same month last year. Seasonal variation is expected. Unusual weather isn't a system fault. 2. Check for shading changes: A tree that grew, a new structure, or debris on panels. Look at the roof from the ground on a sunny day. Visible shading anywhere equals significant production loss. 3. Check for dirt and debris: Panels in areas with pollen, dust, bird droppings, or wildfire ash accumulate coating that reduces output. A significant rain event often restores production. Manual cleaning or professional panel washing restores it more reliably. 4. Check for panel or inverter faults: In the monitoring portal, look at per-panel or per-string production. A string or group of panels producing significantly less than neighbors is a hardware issue. 5. Check inverter clipping: If your production data shows production hitting a flat ceiling on the brightest days, the inverter may be "clipping" -- the panels are generating more power than the inverter can handle. This is usually a design issue, not a fault. 6. Contact your installer for warranty service if you identify a hardware fault. Document everything from the monitoring portal before contacting them.

The goal is to verify the system is delivering the savings it was sold on. Monthly tracking: 1. Note kWh production from the monitoring portal on the 1st of each month 2. Compare to your utility bill's "grid usage" -- this is what you're actually paying for 3. Calculate net metering credits from your utility bill 4. Compare total (production + net metering credits) to your pre-solar usage Your monitoring portal may have a savings estimate tool. These are directional, not exact -- they use estimated electricity rates. Your actual bill is the authoritative number. Performance ratio: Take your annual production ÷ your system's nameplate kWp rating ÷ local peak sun hours. This gives a dimensionless ratio of how efficiently your system is converting available sun to electricity. Expected range: 0.75--0.85. Below 0.70 consistently indicates a system problem worth investigating. For systems with battery storage: Track self-consumption rate (power used directly from solar or battery vs grid) and battery cycle count (most battery apps report this). Sustained low self-consumption may indicate scheduling or battery configuration issues.
