Car Speaker Installation
New speakers dramatically improve any car audio system. The panel removal is the hardest part. Get the mounting and polarity right, and the difference is immediately obvious.
A Geek installs them cleanly -- no broken clips, no exposed wiring, no out-of-phase channels. $129.99.
The new speakers sound amazing. You wired them out of phase. They don't sound amazing. Check polarity.
Before removing any panels:
- •Disconnect the battery before working near door wiring -- power window circuits are always hot
- •Incorrect polarity between speakers cancels bass response -- always verify + to + and − to −
- •Never skip the vapor barrier -- moisture entering through the speaker opening warps the door panel from inside
- •Factory speaker adapters are vehicle-specific -- universal adapters often don't fit correctly and cause speaker rattles
- •Don't overtighten speaker mounting screws into plastic adapter brackets -- plastic strips and the speaker then vibrates
What you'll need
Vehicle-specific parts make the difference between a clean install and a rattle.
Factory speaker openings use proprietary mounting hole patterns. Adapters bridge from factory holes to standard speaker bolt patterns. Without them, you're drilling into door panels.
Connects to the factory speaker wire connector so you don't cut the car's wiring. Required if the factory harness uses Molex or other proprietary connectors.
Door panels are held by clips and screws. Metal screwdrivers break clips and scratch plastic. Plastic pry tools are essential.
Door panel screws are often Torx (star head) in addition to Phillips. A complete bit set saves hunting for the right driver.
Creates an airtight seal between the new speaker and the door panel. Without a seal, the bass is weak and the speaker may buzz from door resonance.
