Before you start:
- •Streaming devices need at least 25Mbps per device for 4K -- run a speed test before troubleshooting quality issues
- •HDMI CEC is enabled by most streaming devices by default -- this may cause your TV to turn on when it shouldn't
- •Apple TV 4K requires an Apple ID -- you cannot set it up without one
- •Fire Stick requires an Amazon account -- it will try to bill your default payment method if you tap 'Buy'
- •Roku accounts are free but required -- create one at roku.com before starting setup
The steps
Choose the right device for your TV and streaming needs
The main options: Roku (Roku Stick 4K, Roku Ultra): Best interface for finding content across services. Simple, no ecosystem lock-in. Great for people who aren't deep in Apple or Amazon. Amazon Fire TV Stick (Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Cube): Best if you use Alexa heavily. Deep Amazon integration. Aggressively promotes Prime Video. Apple TV 4K: Best if you're in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Mac). Best gaming through Apple Arcade. Best AirPlay integration. Most expensive. Google Chromecast with Google TV: Best if you use Android / Google ecosystem. Good voice search across all apps. Your TV may have streaming built in -- Samsung Tizen, LG webOS, Vizio SmartCast. These work but dedicated streaming sticks typically have better performance and app selection.
Connect and power the device
Plug the streaming device into an HDMI port. Most sticks plug directly in; Apple TV and Cube connect via HDMI cable. Power: most streaming sticks include a USB power cable -- plug it into the TV's USB port (if available) or use the included USB power adapter in a wall outlet. Powering from the TV USB is convenient but the TV USB port may not provide enough amperage for all devices. If you see startup issues, use the wall adapter. Switch your TV to the correct HDMI input (the one the device is on). The device should show a setup screen within 30 seconds of being powered.
Connect to WiFi and sign in
Select your WiFi network from the list. Enter your password. If you're on a 5GHz network, the device will connect to it if it supports dual-band (most modern devices do). 5GHz is faster but shorter range; 2.4GHz is slower but better through walls. For 4K streaming: use 5GHz WiFi if the device is within reasonable range of your router, or use a wired ethernet connection (via the device's USB-to-ethernet adapter or built-in ethernet port on Roku Ultra / Apple TV / Fire TV Cube). Wired is always more reliable for 4K. Sign in with your existing account (Amazon, Roku, Apple, Google) or create one. Follow the on-screen instructions. Fire Stick and Apple TV can be set up using your phone -- hold the phone near the device and follow the prompt.
Install and sign into your streaming apps
After initial setup, you'll be prompted to add channels/apps. Add everything you subscribe to: Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max/Max, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, Peacock, YouTube, Plex. Sign in to each app with the correct credentials. Most apps will give you a code to enter at a website on your phone or computer (e.g., netflix.com/tv8) -- this avoids typing long email addresses and passwords on the TV. For Netflix: go to Settings → Audio & Video → enable "Show 4K content" (if your plan supports it). Netflix defaults to lower quality even on 4K TVs unless this is set. For Disney+: 4K Dolby Vision content plays automatically when available -- no setting needed.
Configure your streaming quality settings
Netflix: Account → Playback Settings → select "High" (uses ~3GB/hr for HD) or "Auto." 4K requires the Premium plan. Disney+: Settings → App Settings → Video Quality → set to "Best." 4K is automatic with the Premium plan. YouTube: In the app, go to Settings → Quality → select 4K or "Auto" (auto drops quality on slow connections). Most streaming devices also have a system-wide quality setting: Roku: Settings → Display type → select your TV's resolution (4K HDR). Apple TV: Settings → Video and Audio → Format → 4K Dolby Vision 60Hz. Fire TV: Settings → Display & Sounds → Display → Video Resolution → select 4K Ultra HD. Run a speed test from the streaming device's diagnostic settings if you're having quality issues. You need 25Mbps+ per 4K stream.
Set up universal search and voice control
All major streaming devices offer universal search -- ask for a show and it searches across all your installed apps to find where it's available (and cheapest/free). Roku: Press the microphone button on the remote. Search "Breaking Bad" and it shows Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV+, etc. and their prices. Fire TV: Hold the microphone on the remote for Alexa. Works across all apps. Apple TV: Press the Siri button. "Play Succession on HBO" works as a command. If you have a smart home assistant (Amazon Echo, Google Nest): you can link your streaming device for voice control without picking up the remote. "Alexa, pause Netflix" works if your Fire TV is linked. Set up parental controls if needed -- all devices have profile-based or PIN-protected content restrictions.
