Computer Tune-Up

Before changing anything, find the cause. Don't guess -- measure. Open Task Manager: press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Click "More details" if you see a compact view. Performance tab: Shows live graphs for CPU, Memory (RAM), Disk, and Network. Watch these for 30 seconds while doing your normal tasks. -- CPU above 80% consistently: something is overworking your processor -- Memory near the top of the bar: you're out of RAM, the system is using disk as virtual RAM (very slow) -- Disk at 100%: the most common slowness culprit on HDD-based systems -- disk can't keep up with requests Processes tab: Shows every running process and its resource consumption. Click the CPU column header to sort by CPU usage, highest first. Click the Memory column to sort by RAM usage. Identify the top consumers. Common culprits: -- Antivirus running a scan (temporary, let it finish) -- Windows Update downloading/installing in the background (temporary) -- Browser with many tabs (memory hog -- especially Chrome) -- Outdated malware (high CPU, unusual process names you don't recognize) Startup tab: Shows every program that launches when Windows starts. This is the most common source of a slow boot. Look at the "Startup impact" column -- programs marked High are the worst offenders.

Startup programs are the biggest cause of slow boot times and sluggish performance in the first 5--10 minutes after login. Every program that starts with Windows consumes CPU and RAM before you've even opened anything. Method 1 -- Task Manager (Windows 10 and 11): Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc > click "Startup" tab. You'll see every program that launches at startup with its startup impact (Low / Medium / High). Right-click any entry and select "Disable" to stop it from starting automatically. The program itself is not removed -- it just won't start until you open it manually. Method 2 -- Settings (Windows 11): Go to Settings > Apps > Startup. Toggle off any apps you don't need at login. What's safe to disable: -- Spotify, Skype, Discord, Teams (start these when you need them, not at boot) -- OneDrive (if you don't actively use it) -- Adobe updaters (Acrobat Update Service, etc.) -- Manufacturer bloatware (HP Support Assistant, Lenovo Vantage if you don't use it, Dell SupportAssist) -- Game launchers (Steam, Epic, Battle.net -- start them when gaming, not at boot) What to leave alone: -- Windows Security / Windows Defender -- Your primary antivirus -- Audio drivers (Realtek HD Audio Manager, etc.) -- Graphics drivers (NVIDIA, AMD) After disabling startup programs, restart and time how long it takes to reach a usable desktop. Most systems see a significant improvement.

Windows accumulates temporary files, update caches, and other debris over time. These don't always cause slowness directly, but a very full disk (under 10--15% free space) significantly degrades performance -- especially on HDDs. Windows -- Disk Cleanup: Press Windows key, search "Disk Cleanup," open it. Select the C: drive. Wait for it to calculate. Check boxes for: Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Recycle Bin, Thumbnails, Downloaded Program Files. Click "Clean up system files" for additional options -- this adds Windows Update cleanup files, which can be several GB on systems that haven't been cleaned in a while. Click OK > Delete Files. Windows -- Storage Sense: Go to Settings > System > Storage. Click "Storage Sense." Enable it to run automatically (recommended: monthly). Click "Run Storage Sense now" for an immediate cleanup. Also shows a breakdown of what's using your storage -- click any category to see details. Windows -- Manual cleanup targets: -- Downloads folder: open it and delete anything you don't need. Downloads folders accumulate installers, ZIP files, and random files for years. -- Recycle Bin: right-click the desktop Recycle Bin > Empty Recycle Bin. -- C:\Windows\Temp: press Windows+R, type %temp%, press Enter. Select all (Ctrl+A) and delete. Skip any files that give "in use" errors. Mac -- cleanup: -- Empty Trash (right-click Trash > Empty Trash) -- Clear Downloads folder -- System Settings > General > Storage for a storage breakdown and recommendations -- In Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, navigate to ~/Library/Caches -- review and clear browser caches if large

A failing hard drive is the cause of unexplained slowness, freezing, random errors, and eventual catastrophic data loss. Check the health of your drive before assuming software is the problem. Windows -- CrystalDiskInfo: Download free from crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo. Run it (no install required -- it's a portable app). It reads the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) data built into your drive. Reading the results: -- Blue "Good": drive is healthy -- Yellow "Caution": one or more SMART attributes are outside normal range. Back up immediately and monitor closely. Plan for replacement. -- Red "Bad": drive is failing. Back up immediately and replace. Do not delay. Look specifically at: Reallocated Sectors Count, Pending Sector Count, Uncorrectable Sector Count. Any non-zero value in these three attributes is serious even on a "Good" rated drive. Also note: Power On Hours. A drive with 40,000+ hours is very old and statistically near end of life regardless of SMART status. Mac -- Disk Utility: Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select your startup disk in the left panel. Click "First Aid" > Run. This checks for and repairs file system errors. Disk Utility does not show the same detailed SMART data as CrystalDiskInfo -- consider downloading DriveDx (paid) for detailed Mac SMART monitoring. Windows -- built-in check disk: Open Command Prompt as Administrator (search "cmd," right-click > Run as administrator). Type: chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter. It will schedule a scan at next restart. Restart and let it run -- this can take 1--3 hours on a large HDD.

Malware is a surprisingly common cause of computer slowness -- cryptominers, adware, and spyware all consume CPU and RAM in the background. Windows Defender (built-in): Press Windows key, search "Windows Security," open it. Click "Virus & threat protection" > "Quick scan." A full scan takes longer but is more thorough -- run it if you suspect something. Windows Defender is a legitimate, capable antivirus that Microsoft includes for free. You do not need a paid antivirus in addition to it. Malwarebytes Free (second-opinion scan): Download from malwarebytes.com. Install and run a scan. Malwarebytes specifically targets adware, PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), and malware types that traditional antivirus sometimes misses. The free version does not provide real-time protection -- it's a manual scanner. Run it as a second-opinion tool, not a replacement for Windows Defender. What to do with detections: -- Quarantine everything Malwarebytes flags and restart. After restart, run the scan again. If clean, empty the quarantine. -- If Windows Defender finds something it can't remove, restart into Safe Mode (Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart > press F4 for Safe Mode) and run the scan again. Signs you may have malware: -- Browser homepage changed without your permission -- Unexpected ads, pop-ups, or new toolbars in the browser -- CPU or RAM usage high with no obvious program causing it (check Task Manager > Processes for unfamiliar entries) -- Antivirus disabled and can't be re-enabled

Every installed program takes up disk space and many install background services that consume RAM and CPU even when you're not using the program. Windows 10/11: Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Sort by size (largest first) or by install date (oldest first). Uninstall anything you don't recognize or haven't opened in 6+ months. Common bloatware to remove: -- Trial antivirus software (McAfee, Norton trials that came with the PC) -- Manufacturer "helper" apps (HP Wolf Security, Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo bloatware) -- only if you don't use them -- Candy Crush, Solitaire Collection, and other Microsoft-bundled games -- Any "PC Cleaner," "Driver Updater," or "System Optimizer" you didn't intentionally install -- Old versions of software you've since updated (check for multiple Java, .NET, or Visual C++ versions) Do NOT uninstall: -- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables (many programs depend on them) -- .NET Framework versions (same reason) -- Drivers or driver packages -- Anything with "Microsoft" in the name unless you're certain On Mac: drag unused apps from Applications to Trash. For a deeper clean, use AppCleaner (free) which also removes the app's associated preference files and caches. After uninstalling, restart and check your free disk space. You may be surprised how much you get back.

Windows and macOS both use free disk space for virtual memory, temporary files, update staging, and system operations. When free space drops below 10--15% of total capacity, performance degrades noticeably -- especially on HDDs. Check your free space: -- Windows: open File Explorer, right-click the C: drive > Properties. The pie chart shows used vs. free space. Or: Settings > System > Storage. -- Mac: Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage tab. If you're under 10% free, take these actions in order: 1. Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash (quick, easy, often ignored for months). 2. Delete large files you no longer need: sort your Downloads folder by file size (right-click > Sort by > Size in Windows; Finder > View > Show View Options > sort by Size on Mac). Installers, ISO files, and large video files are common culprits. 3. Uninstall programs you don't use: Settings > Apps > Installed Apps. Sort by size. Uninstall anything you haven't opened in 6+ months. 4. Run Disk Cleanup / Storage Sense (see Step 3) to remove Windows update caches and temp files. 5. Move large files -- photos, videos, backups -- to an external drive or cloud storage. 6. If you're on a laptop with a small SSD (128GB, 256GB) and consistently near capacity, the long-term solution is replacing the SSD with a larger one or supplementing with external storage.

Outdated Windows builds and drivers cause performance issues, security vulnerabilities, and compatibility problems. This step is boring but necessary. Windows Update: Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Install everything available, including optional updates. Restart when prompted. Check again after restart -- updates often chain (installing one unlocks another). Keep checking and restarting until Windows Update says "You're up to date." On a machine that hasn't been updated in months, this can take several rounds. Driver updates: After Windows Update finishes, check for driver updates specifically: -- GPU drivers: download the latest from nvidia.com/Download (NVIDIA) or amd.com/support (AMD). Windows Update installs GPU drivers, but they're often months behind the manufacturer's latest release. -- Chipset drivers: visit your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's support page and download the latest chipset driver package. -- Check Device Manager (right-click Start > Device Manager) for any yellow triangle warning icons -- these indicate devices with missing or broken drivers. BIOS/firmware updates: Check your manufacturer's support page for BIOS updates. These fix stability issues and sometimes improve performance. Follow the manufacturer's exact instructions for updating -- a failed BIOS update can brick the motherboard.

Software tuning has limits. If the hardware is the bottleneck, no amount of startup program disabling will fix it. Hard drive vs. SSD: An HDD (traditional spinning disk) reads data at 80--160 MB/s. An SSD reads at 500--7,000 MB/s depending on the type. If your computer uses an HDD, it is the single largest contributor to slowness in everyday tasks -- boot time, program launch, file loading. This is fixable with a hardware upgrade, not a tune-up. To check if you have HDD or SSD on Windows: Open Task Manager > Performance tab > Disk. Under the disk graph, it will say "Disk 0 (SSD)" or "Disk 0 (HDD)." Alternatively, search "defragment" -- if Windows offers to defragment (not optimize) it's an HDD; SSDs show "Optimize." RAM under 8GB: With less than 8GB of RAM, Chrome + one other application will begin using your hard drive as virtual RAM (called paging). This causes severe slowness. Check your RAM: Task Manager > Performance > Memory. If you see 7.9GB or less and your usage is frequently over 70%, RAM is the bottleneck. Adding RAM is often the most cost-effective upgrade for a slow computer. CPU age: A laptop CPU from 2013--2016 is genuinely slow by modern standards. Web pages are more demanding than they were a decade ago. No software fix will make a Core i5-4200U feel like a modern machine. At some point the right answer is a new computer, not a tune-up. The honest summary: -- Slow boot + normal speed once open: startup programs (Step 2) -- Slow overall, always: HDD or low RAM -- Slow and hot: dust/thermal issues (needs cleaning or repasting) -- Slow and weird behavior: malware (Step 5) -- Slow and old: hardware replacement

Don't assume it worked -- measure it. Compare your results to what you found in Step 1. Open Task Manager again and check: ✓ CPU usage at idle (should be under 10% with nothing open) ✓ Memory usage at idle (should be under 50% with nothing open) ✓ Disk usage at idle (should be 0--5%, not pegged at 100%) ✓ Boot time -- restart and time it from power button to usable desktop Run through your normal workflow: ✓ Open your browser with your typical number of tabs -- does it feel snappier? ✓ Launch your most-used applications -- do they open faster? ✓ Open Task Manager during normal use -- is anything pegged at 100%? If things are better: great. Set up Storage Sense to run monthly, keep startup programs minimal, and run Malwarebytes once a month as maintenance. If things are the same: the problem is likely hardware (Step 9). An SSD upgrade, RAM addition, or -- honestly -- a new machine may be the real fix. If things are worse: undo your most recent change. If you disabled a startup program that turns out to be important, re-enable it in Task Manager > Startup. If you uninstalled something you shouldn't have, reinstall it.
