TV Wall Mounting

The single most important step and the one most people rush. Seated eye level puts the center of your screen at 42--48" from the floor for average couch height (17--18" seat height). But measure your actual seating: sit down, look straight ahead, that's your eye level. Mark it on the wall. Consider: Is there a window behind or beside the wall that will cause glare? Is there an outlet within reach for the TV's power cable? Is there a stud layout that will work (most are 16" apart, but older homes may be 24")? Where do your AV components sit -- can cables reach them? Mark your desired screen center with a small pencil X. This is your reference point for everything that follows.

Run your stud finder slowly across the wall, moving left to right, starting about 6" left of your desired position. Most stud finders beep and light up as they cross the edge of a stud -- mark both the left edge and right edge with a pencil tick. The center of the stud is exactly between those two marks. Standard stud spacing is 16" on-center (OC), though 24" OC exists in some construction. Once you find one stud, measure 16" in each direction to predict the next. Confirm with the finder. You need to hit TWO studs with your wall plate. If your mount's bolt holes are spaced 16" apart, you're set. If they're 24" apart and your studs are 16" OC, you have a problem -- get a wider mount or use rated heavy-duty toggle anchors in addition to the studs. CRITICAL: Knock on the wall and listen. A solid thud = stud. A hollow sound = empty drywall. Use both methods.

VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association) is the standardized bolt hole pattern on the back of your TV, measured in millimeters -- width × height. Common patterns: 200×200, 400×200, 400×400, 600×400, 800×400. To find yours: flip your TV face-down on a padded surface (moving blanket or the box foam) and look at the back. There will be 4 threaded holes in a rectangular pattern. Measure center-to-center, width first, then height. OR: Check your TV's user manual or Google "[your TV model] VESA pattern." Your mount packaging will list which VESA patterns it supports. If your TV's VESA and the mount's supported patterns don't match, stop here. Return the mount and get the right one. This is not a workaround situation. Also check: your TV's weight vs. the mount's weight rating. A 75" TV can be 90--120 lbs. Most mounts are rated for 100--175 lbs, but verify.

Open the mount box and lay every piece on the floor. You'll typically have: a wall plate, a TV plate (or arms), bolts, lag screws, spacers, a level, and sometimes a cable organizer clip. Read the included instruction sheet completely before touching anything. Every mount is slightly different. Some TV plates fold up; some tilt separately from the swivel. Some require the spacers on the VESA bolts; some don't. Know what you're working with. Sort the hardware into groups: wall hardware (lag bolts, washers for studs), TV hardware (VESA bolts, spacers). Many mounts include too many bolt sizes -- select the correct ones for YOUR TV's VESA bolt thread (usually M6 or M8, check your TV manual).

Hold the wall plate against the wall with one hand, positioning it so the bolt holes land on your confirmed stud centers, and the plate sits at the right height for your screen center. Use your level on top of the plate -- confirm it reads perfectly level. If the plate has two bolt holes per stud, both need to be on the stud. Mark each bolt hole location with a pencil dot through the hole. Set the plate aside. Using a 1/8" drill bit, drill pilot holes at each marked location. Go at least 1.5" deep into the stud (through drywall, which is typically 1/2" thick, and into the wood). Keep the drill perpendicular to the wall -- not angled up or down. The pilot hole prevents the stud wood from splitting and guides the lag bolt in straight.

Drive the lag bolts (usually 5/16" or 3/8" hex head lags, 2.5" long) through the wall plate and into your pilot holes. Use a socket wrench or drill with socket attachment. Tighten until snug -- the plate should be flush against the wall with no gap. Do not overtighten: you'll strip the wood or crack the drywall around the holes. "Snug" means it doesn't move, not "as tight as humanly possible." Once bolted in, grab the wall plate with both hands and pull hard -- toward you, left, right, up. It should feel welded to the wall. Any movement means something is wrong: you missed the stud, the bolt is in the wrong hole, or the stud is damaged. Stop and fix it now, not after the TV is on it. If the plate has cable management features, route your cables now before hanging the TV.

Lay your TV face-down on a padded surface -- the shipping box foam is perfect, or a folded moving blanket on a table. Don't lay it on hardwood or carpet without padding. Locate the 4 VESA bolt holes. Attach the TV plate (or the mounting arms, depending on your mount type) using the correct VESA bolts. If spacers are included and the instructions say to use them, use them -- they prevent the bolt head from bottoming out before the plate is secure. Thread each bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Then tighten with a screwdriver -- snug, not cranked. The back panel of most TVs is plastic. Overtightening VESA bolts cracks it. Some mounts have the TV plate permanently integrated with the wall plate arms -- in that case, skip this step.

You cannot hang the TV alone unless you enjoy wall damage, TV damage, and potentially back surgery. Get your second person. Person 1: Lifts the TV by gripping the sides (never the screen), with knees bent -- not back bent. The TV is heavy and awkward. Person 2: Guides the TV plate onto the wall plate hooks or slots. Different mount designs engage differently -- some hooks hang from above, some click in from the side, some pins lock into slots. Know your mount's engagement method from the instructions BEFORE lifting the TV. Approach the wall, align, engage slowly. Let the TV rest its weight onto the mount hooks rather than forcing it. You'll feel and hear it seat. Engage any locking mechanism your mount includes. This is the pin, screw, or tab that prevents the TV from being accidentally lifted off the wall. Do not skip this.

Before releasing the TV, put your level on top of the screen. Most mounts allow micro-adjustment after hanging. If your level shows a tilt, find the adjustment mechanism (usually a bolt at the bottom of the wall plate or a set screw on the arm) and correct it. If your mount tilts (downward angle), set it now. The typical recommendation is 0--5° of downward tilt for a TV at eye level. More than 10° tilt causes noticeable picture distortion on LCD panels. If your mount swivels, center it for now. Once level is confirmed: grip both sides of the TV and push toward the wall, pull toward you (gently), and wiggle side to side. The TV should not move. The mount should absorb all force without flexing or grinding.

Option A -- In-wall: Cut two holes using a drywall saw: one behind the TV, one near the floor/outlet. Feed a fish rod or fish tape up from the bottom hole to the top. Attach your cable bundle and pull it back down. Seal with low-voltage mounting plates (the open plastic plates sold for this purpose -- do not use standard electrical boxes for HDMI). This requires no studs in the way of your path -- check first with your stud finder. Option B -- Surface raceway: Run an adhesive-backed paintable plastic cable channel (raceway) from the TV down to the equipment location. More visible than in-wall but installs in 20 minutes with no drywall cutting. Either way: bundle your HDMI, power, optical, and ethernet cables together with velcro cable ties before routing. Power and signal cables should be separated if possible (parallel runs can cause interference on long HDMI runs over 15 feet -- use a fiber HDMI cable if needed). Leave extra slack in all cables at the TV end to allow for tilt/swivel movement without straining connections.

Work through this list before declaring victory: ✓ Level check with a fresh eye -- step back 10 feet and look at it. Your brain will catch what the level misses. ✓ Locking mechanism engaged on the mount ✓ All HDMI / power / optical cables plugged in completely (half-inserted HDMI is the most common source of "no signal") ✓ TV powers on and shows picture ✓ Tilt and swivel move freely and return to intended position ✓ No cables are pinched between TV and wall (especially if using a fixed mount with zero gap) ✓ All mount hardware accounted for -- no bolts left over (loose hardware from a finished job means something isn't bolted) ✓ Clean up: drywall dust, packaging, tools off the floor Sit down.
