Diagnose before you touch anything
The most expensive mistake in TV repair is ordering parts before you know what's wrong. Spend 20 minutes diagnosing properly before opening the case. **Black screen with sound:** TV is on, you can hear audio, but no picture. Usually a backlight or power supply issue -- not the panel. Try factory reset first (Settings → Support → Self Diagnosis → Reset or similar). Software fixes are free. **Vertical or horizontal lines:** Could be T-con board (fixable, ~$15--40) or panel damage (not fixable without replacing the panel). Gently press the bezels while the TV is on -- if the lines shift, it's a loose ribbon cable or T-con board issue. If nothing changes, it's the panel. **Sound distortion or no audio with picture:** Likely main board audio output or blown speaker. Speakers are $10--30 to replace.
Look up your exact model and known failure modes
Search: "[Your TV model] common problems" and "[Your TV model] repair forum" Model number is on the back of the TV (pull it out from the wall or look on the side bezel). Check fuses and power supply voltage
Before ordering boards, check the simplest fixes first. **Unplug the TV for 30 minutes.** This is not optional -- it's safety. Capacitors on the power board hold enough charge to kill you. Remove the back panel screws (usually Phillips PH2, 8--20 screws around the perimeter). Good capacitors have flat tops. Bulged caps are a guaranteed failure -- they can be replaced individually if you can solder, or replace the whole board.
Fix backlight failures (black screen with sound)
Backlight failure is one of the most common and most fixable TV issues -- especially on older LED TVs (2012--2020). **Confirm it's the backlight:** In a dark room, shine a flashlight at the screen at a 45-degree angle while the TV is powered on. If you can faintly see the picture, the backlight has failed but the panel and main board are fine. **Types of backlight failure:** 1. Single failed LED strip -- common, causes dark band across screen 2. Dead backlight driver board -- less common, causes full blackout 3. Test before full reassembly -- power on with just the LED strips and driver board connected to confirm backlight works. - Reassemble in reverse. The diffuser layers go back in a specific order -- keep them in order as you remove them. This repair takes 2--4 hours the first time.
Replace the T-con board (lines on screen)
The T-con (timing control) board converts signals from the main board into the gate/source drivers that control individual pixels. When it fails, you get vertical or horizontal lines, color shifts, or partial screen issues. **Confirm it's the T-con:** - Horizontal lines that span the full width → likely T-con - Vertical lines that span the full height → likely T-con or ribbon cable - Press gently on the back of the TV near where the T-con board is located (center-back on most TVs) while watching the screen -- if lines shift, it's either the T-con or the ribbon cables connecting it to the panel **T-con replacement:** - T-con boards are typically $15--50 for most models (search your model + "T-con board") - The board is usually held by 4 screws or clips on the back of the TV, no panel disassembly required - It connects via 2--4 ribbon cables (LVDS or V-by-One) -- unlock the ribbon cable tabs (flip the brown locking tab up) before pulling the cable - Swap the board, re-seat all ribbon cables, confirm locking tabs are closed, test before closing the back panel **Ribbon cable check:** If replacing the T-con doesn't fix the issue, carefully re-seat all ribbon cables connecting T-con to panel. These can work loose over years. Clean contacts with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab before reinserting.
Replace the main board (software or signal failures)
The main board handles HDMI input processing, app software, network connectivity, and audio/video processing. Signs of main board failure: - TV boots to a blank/frozen screen but responds to power button - Specific HDMI ports don't work (test all ports before condemning the board -- could be the cable or the source device) - Apps crash repeatedly after factory reset - TV produces image but no audio from any source - Smart TV features work but no picture from any HDMI **Before replacing the board:** 1. Reassemble, test, and monitor
Before buttoning everything up, test fully with the back panel off: -- Power on, confirm picture -- Test every HDMI input with a device -- Confirm audio from all sources -- Test buttons on the TV (not just remote) -- confirms the button board is connected -- Let it run for 15 minutes -- some failures are thermal (show up after warmup) **Reassembly notes:** -- Ribbon cables: press evenly across the full width of the connector, then close the locking tab. Know when to walk away
Not every TV repair is worth attempting.
