TV Setup & Calibration

Before powering up, run all your connections: HDMI from streaming devices, cable/satellite box, gaming console, and Blu-ray player. Use HDMI 2.1 ports if available for 4K/120Hz gaming. HDMI ARC or eARC connects to your soundbar or AV receiver for audio return. Label which device is on which HDMI port using tape -- this saves confusion in settings later. Connect ethernet if available for stable streaming (wireless works, but wired is more reliable for 4K HDR content that can peak at 25+ Mbps). Power cables last. Plug the TV and all connected devices into a surge protector -- not directly into the wall. Once everything is connected physically, turn it on.

The TV will walk you through initial setup: language, WiFi, smart TV account. Go through these carefully. On smart TV account setup: you'll be prompted to create or log into a Samsung, LG, Sony, or Vizio account. This is optional but enables features. Read what data collection you're agreeing to -- most smart TVs enable ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) by default. ACR monitors what you watch for ad targeting. Look for "Viewing Information Services," "SambaTV," or "ACR" in privacy settings and decide if you want it on. Where to find it by brand: -- Samsung: Settings → General → Privacy → Viewing Information Services → OFF -- LG: Settings → General → System → Additional Settings → Live Plus → OFF -- Sony: Settings → System → Samba TV → OFF -- Vizio: Settings → System → Reset & Admin → Viewing Data → OFF Do not skip the software update prompt. Get the latest firmware before calibrating anything -- updates can change picture settings and sometimes reset them entirely.

Every TV ships in "Vivid" or "Dynamic" mode because it looks impressive in a bright showroom. At home, it's eye-searing, crushes shadow detail, and blows out highlights. It also jacks up your power bill -- Vivid mode runs the backlight at maximum. Switch to "Movie," "Cinema," "Filmmaker," or "Calibrated" mode depending on your TV brand. These modes are closest to accurate color reproduction with a warmer color temperature (D65 standard). For Filmmaker Mode (available on LG, Samsung, Vizio, TCL): enable it. It automatically disables motion processing, sharpness enhancement, and other processing for the most accurate picture. It was designed with major studios and directors -- literally endorsed by Martin Scorsese. "Standard" mode is acceptable as a compromise. "Game Mode" is for gaming only (it disables processing to reduce input lag). Never use Vivid or Dynamic for anything except impressing people who are standing 2 feet from your TV at a Best Buy.

Motion smoothing -- called "Motion Flow" (Sony), "TruMotion" (LG), "Auto Motion Plus" (Samsung), "MotionRate" (TCL) -- artificially inserts frames to make 24fps film content look like 60fps video. The result is that movies look like they were shot on a camcorder in 1987. This is the single most complained-about setting in home theater. Directors hate it so much that Tom Cruise made a public video asking people to turn it off. Find it in Picture Settings → Advanced/Expert Settings → Motion or Motion Smoothing. Set it to Off, or Custom with Blur Reduction at 0 and Judder Reduction at 0. Exception: if you watch a lot of live sports, a small amount of motion processing can reduce motion blur on fast action. Keep Blur Reduction at 2--3 for sports, off for everything else. Some TVs let you set this per-input -- use that.

Most people think "brightness" means "how bright the TV is." It doesn't. Here's what each setting actually controls: Backlight (or OLED Brightness on OLEDs): This is actual screen brightness. Set it to match your room's ambient light. Completely dark room: 15--25. Average room lighting: 40--60. Bright room: 70--100. On OLEDs, keeping this moderate extends panel life. Brightness (Black Level): Controls how dark the darkest areas look. Set it so near-black areas (dark shadow details) are just barely visible -- not crushed to pure black, not lifted to gray. Use a black-level test pattern: you should see bars 17--25 distinctly, bars 1--16 should blend into black. Contrast (White Level): Controls peak white. Set it so bright areas (highlights, white shirts) are bright but not clipped -- you should still see texture in white areas. Start at 85 and adjust up until you lose detail, then back down one notch. Sharpness: Turn it down to 0--15. Default sharpness settings add artificial edge enhancement (haloing) that makes fine detail look fake. At 0 you're seeing the TV's native resolution. Anything above 25 is adding artifacts.

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is the single biggest picture quality improvement over standard content. It requires both an HDR-capable TV and HDR content. Your TV panel must support it -- check the spec sheet for HDR10, Dolby Vision, or HLG. HDR10: The baseline HDR standard. Supported on all HDR TVs. Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ all use it. Static metadata -- one brightness setting for the entire movie. Dolby Vision: Dynamic metadata -- adjusts brightness scene by scene. Supported on LG, Sony, Vizio, TCL, Hisense. Not on Samsung (they use HDR10+ instead). Prioritize Dolby Vision content when available -- it looks better. HDR10+: Samsung and Panasonic's answer to Dolby Vision. Also dynamic metadata. Amazon Prime has some HDR10+ content. In HDR mode, increase the backlight/OLED brightness setting -- HDR content is designed for higher peak brightness than SDR. The TV should auto-switch to HDR mode when it detects HDR content (look for an HDR badge in the corner or info overlay). Some TVs have separate HDR picture settings that override SDR settings. Check that Movie/Cinema is also selected in HDR mode -- some TVs default back to Standard for HDR.

Install your streaming apps from the TV's app store: Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Plex, etc. Sign in to each. For each app, check its in-app settings: -- Netflix: Profile → Playback → Data Usage → Set to "High" for 4K HDR. Audio → Select "Dolby Atmos 5.1+" if your audio system supports it. -- Disney+: Settings → App Language → Video Playback → confirm "Data Saver" is OFF -- Apple TV+: The app auto-selects 4K Dolby Vision if available. Check. -- YouTube: Settings → Video Quality → select "Auto" or "2160p" for 4K. YouTube's 4K is VP9 codec and can look softer than other services. If using an external streaming device (Apple TV 4K, Roku Ultra, Fire TV Cube): connect it to an HDMI 2.1 port for full 4K/HDR/Dolby Vision passthrough. Set the device's video output to match your TV's capabilities -- usually 4K SDR with "Match Dynamic Range" and "Match Frame Rate" enabled.

Sound settings: If you have a soundbar or AV receiver: -- Enable HDMI ARC or eARC (Settings → Sound → Sound Output → ARC/HDMI) -- Enable CEC (Samsung: Anynet+, LG: SimpLink, Sony: Bravia Sync) so one remote controls volume -- Set TV speakers to "off" if you have external speakers -- double audio output is the most common complaint we hear If using built-in TV speakers (no shame): go to Sound → Advanced → select Surround Virtual or Dolby Atmos (if available). Avoid "Stadium" or "Movie" audio modes -- they add echo that sounds bad in a normal room. Set the audio format: if connecting via HDMI ARC to a soundbar that supports Dolby Atmos, set audio output to "Bitstream" → "Dolby Digital Plus" or "Auto." If via optical, use "Dolby Digital" (optical can't carry Atmos). Dialogue enhancement: most TVs and soundbars have a dialogue boost or voice enhancement mode. Turn it on if you're constantly adjusting volume between dialogue and action scenes.

Label each HDMI input in the TV's settings with what's connected: "Xbox," "Roku," "Cable Box," etc. This makes the input selector usable without memorizing which HDMI is which. Most TVs auto-detect device types -- verify they got it right. Enable Game Mode on the HDMI inputs connected to gaming consoles. Game Mode bypasses picture processing to minimize input lag (the delay between controller input and screen response). Input lag in Game Mode is typically 10--20ms vs. 80--120ms without it. The difference is immediately noticeable in fast-paced games. If your TV and gaming console both support HDMI 2.1 (PS5, Xbox Series X): enable 4K/120Hz in the console settings and confirm the TV is receiving it (look for a 120Hz indicator in the TV's info overlay). This requires HDMI 2.1 cables and the correct HDMI port -- not all ports on the TV may support 2.1. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) / FreeSync / G-Sync: Enable in both the TV settings and console settings if supported. This eliminates screen tearing in games. Some TVs call this "Game Motion Plus" or "VRR" in the game mode settings.

Work through this list before declaring victory: ✓ Picture mode set to Movie/Cinema/Filmmaker for all inputs (check each one -- they're independent) ✓ Motion smoothing OFF (or Filmmaker Mode enabled) ✓ Sharpness at 0--15 ✓ Backlight appropriate for your room lighting ✓ HDR content showing HDR badge when playing (test on Netflix or Disney+) ✓ Game Mode enabled ONLY on gaming console inputs ✓ Sound outputting to correct device (soundbar/receiver, not TV speakers -- unless intended) ✓ CEC working (TV remote controls soundbar volume) ✓ All streaming apps signed in and set to highest quality ✓ ACR/tracking disabled if you care about privacy ✓ Firmware updated to latest version ✓ HDMI inputs labeled Sit down. Watch something you know well. If the picture looks warm and cinematic instead of cold and oversaturated, you did it right. If everything still looks like a soap opera, go back to Step 4.
