Before you transmit anything:
- •MMSI must be registered before your first trip -- an unregistered DSC distress call does not transmit vessel identity or contact information to the Coast Guard.
- •Never press the red Distress button accidentally during testing -- the distress alert transmits on Channel 16 internationally and Coast Guard response begins immediately.
- •VHF antennas must be vertical -- a canted or horizontal antenna loses gain and range significantly.
- •Coax connections at the antenna base must be sealed with self-amalgamating tape -- exposed PL-259 connections corrode and degrade signal without visible external symptoms.
- •Never mount the antenna within 3 feet of a radar antenna -- radar interference with VHF reception is a real problem on crowded helm structures.
What you'll need
Antenna quality and mounting height determine your range more than the radio model.
A fixed-mount VHF with DSC (Digital Selective Calling) is required for the GPS-linked distress button that broadcasts your position to the Coast Guard. Handheld VHFs are fine as backup but the fixed-mount is your primary safety device.
The antenna determines your range. A quality Shakespeare or Shakespeare style antenna at the masthead of a sailboat or the highest point on a powerboat dramatically extends transmit/receive range. Coax quality matters -- cheap coax loses signal on longer cable runs.
The coax cable connects to the antenna and radio with PL-259 connectors. Soldering these correctly requires practice. Pre-terminated antenna cables eliminate this step and are worth the slight extra cost for a reliable weatherproof connection.
The VHF radio needs a dedicated 12V circuit fused at 5--10A (depending on the radio). Marine-grade tinned wire is required -- the radio area often has moisture exposure from open hatches and spray.
Connecting the VHF to a GPS position source activates the DSC distress feature -- when you press the distress button, your GPS coordinates transmit with the call. Without a GPS feed, the distress call goes out without position information.
