Water Damaged Phone -- What To Do Right Now
The next 60 seconds determine whether your phone survives. Most people do exactly the wrong things (rice, charging, turning it on to check). This guide tells you what actually works.

Do NOT charge or power on yet
Someone told you to put it in rice. You put it in rice. The phone died. But the rice was perfectly hydrated.
Before you start:
- •DO NOT plug in the phone or try to charge it. Water and electricity create short circuits that permanently destroy the logic board. The most common cause of preventable water damage death is charging a wet phone.
- •DO NOT turn the phone on to check if it works. If it is off, leave it off. If it is on, power it off immediately. A powered circuit with water on it is a circuit that is actively destroying itself.
- •Rice does not work. This is not an opinion -- it is a physics problem. Uncooked rice has similar moisture absorption to ambient air. It does not create meaningful desiccation at the timescale required to save a phone. Rice is a food. Use silica gel.
- •DO NOT use a hair dryer, oven, microwave, or any external heat source. Heat drives moisture deeper into the device and causes thermal stress. The goal is cool, dry, desiccated air circulation -- not heat.
- •'Water resistant' and 'waterproof' are not the same thing. IP67 and IP68 ratings apply to fresh water at specific depths and durations. Saltwater, pool water (chlorinated), and toilet water are more corrosive than plain water and bypass the rating's assumptions. IP ratings also degrade with age and drops.
- •The longer you wait, the more damage corrosion does. Mineral deposits from water cause shorts and corrosion on copper traces within hours in a warm environment. Every hour matters. A phone sitting in a drawer for three days while you think about it is probably not recoverable.
What you'll need
Most of this can be ordered or found quickly. The silica gel is the critical one -- get it before anything else.

The actual effective desiccant for phone drying. Silica gel absorbs moisture aggressively. The little packets from shoe boxes work but you need a lot of them -- a 500g bag is cheap on Amazon.
Airtight container or zip-lock bag (large enough for the phone)
The silica gel only works when the phone is sealed in an enclosed space with it. An open bowl on the counter is not drying your phone -- it is drying your kitchen.

Corrosion from mineral-laden water (tap water, salt water, toilet water) leaves conductive deposits on the logic board. 90%+ IPA and a soft-bristled brush can clean these deposits before they cause shorts.

If you are able to open the phone to remove the battery and improve drying (possible on some Android phones with removable backs), you need the right screwdrivers. For iPhone, a Pentalobe P2 driver opens the bottom screws.

The steps
7 steps. Step 1 is urgent -- do it before you read the rest.

Power off immediately -- this is the most important step
If the phone is on, turn it off. Right now. Not after you read this step. Right now.
Power off completely:
-- iPhone: Press and hold the side button + volume down until the slider appears, then slide to power off. On older iPhones (SE, 8 and earlier), press and hold the top or right button.
-- Android: Press and hold the power button. Select Power Off.
If the phone will not power off normally (touchscreen unresponsive, screen black), do a force shut down:
-- iPhone 8 and later: press Volume Up, press Volume Down, then press and hold Side button until screen goes black
-- iPhone 7: hold Volume Down + Sleep/Wake simultaneously until screen goes black
-- Most Android: hold Power button for 10--15 seconds
Do not press the home button "just to see" if it still works. Do not connect it to a charger "to see if there is power." Do not put it face-down in rice and go back to your day. Power off is step one and it has to happen in the first 60 seconds.
The reason this matters: a powered circuit with water on the logic board creates current paths through the water that cause electrochemical corrosion, galvanic corrosion, and direct short circuits. Turning the power off stops this process cold. Every second the phone is powered on with water inside is damage accumulating.
Pro tip: If the phone dropped into salt water, pool water, or anything other than clean tap water, rinse it briefly under clean cold running water before doing anything else. This sounds counterintuitive but dilutes and removes the more corrosive contaminants before they have time to concentrate.

Remove what you can, immediately
While the phone is powered off, remove everything removable:
-- SIM card tray: use a SIM ejector tool or a straightened paperclip. Remove the SIM card and dry it separately on a paper towel. SIM cards are not water-sensitive but the tray slot benefits from being open for drying.
-- Case and screen protector: remove them completely. Cases trap moisture against the phone body and slow drying dramatically. A case that kept a phone looking great for a year will ruin it after a water drop if you leave it on.
-- Any accessories in ports: headphone cables, USB cables, etc.
If you have an Android phone with a removable back cover and battery (rare on modern phones but common on older models): remove the battery. This is the single most effective step for a phone with a removable battery. A disconnected battery cannot create a short circuit regardless of how wet the internals get.
For iPhone and modern Android phones with sealed batteries (most of them): do not attempt to open the device unless you are comfortable with phone repair. The risk of causing more damage during disassembly while the phone is wet is real. Leave the battery connected and proceed to drying.
After removing what you can: gently shake the phone to remove pooled water. Hold it with the charging port facing down and tap it lightly against your palm. You are trying to remove bulk water, not dry the device -- that comes next.
Blot the exterior with a lint-free cloth or paper towel. Do not rub -- patting removes surface water without pushing it further into openings.
Pro tip: Blow compressed air into the charging port, speakers, and any other openings in short 1-second bursts with the phone tilted so the port faces down. This removes water that pooled in the port rather than driving it deeper.

Do not use rice -- use silica gel in an airtight container
The rice myth is persistent and wrong. Here is why it matters:
Why rice fails:
-- Rice absorbs moisture at roughly the same rate as ambient air. It is not meaningfully better than leaving the phone on a table.
-- Rice does not create a desiccated microenvironment inside the phone -- it just sits around the outside.
-- Rice dust and starch can enter the charging port and speaker grilles, creating additional problems.
-- Studies comparing rice to other methods show it performs no better than leaving the phone in open air and worse than actual desiccants.
What actually works: silica gel desiccant in an airtight container.
How to set it up:
1. Get a zip-lock bag or airtight container large enough to hold the phone plus a significant volume of silica gel packets.
2. Pour 200--500g of silica gel into the container.
3. Place the phone face-down in the container (so any remaining water in the earpiece and screen area drains toward the container rather than pooling behind the display).
4. Seal the container tightly.
5. Leave it undisturbed for 48--72 hours. Yes, 48 hours minimum. Not 12 hours. Not overnight. 48 hours.
The silica gel creates a genuinely desiccated microenvironment inside the sealed container. As the internal humidity of the container drops below the internal humidity of the phone, moisture migrates out of the phone to equalize. This is the mechanism that works.
Temperature: room temperature is fine. Slightly warm (top of a refrigerator, near a warm vent) is marginally better. Do not use a heat source.
Pro tip: Blue silica gel packets change color to pink/red when saturated with moisture. If you open the container after 48 hours and the silica gel is fully saturated, replace it with fresh silica gel and continue drying for another 24 hours.

Assess the phone after 48--72 hours
After at least 48 hours in silica gel, it is time to assess.
Power on test:
Connect the phone to a charger (do not try to power on without charging -- if the battery drained during the event, you may get no response). Wait 2 minutes. Then try to power on.
Scenarios and what they mean:
Phone powers on normally, everything works:
Good outcome. You got lucky or caught it fast enough. Monitor it for the next few days -- corrosion can cause delayed failures as mineral deposits continue to oxidize. Watch for: intermittent speaker problems, charging issues, camera problems.
Phone powers on but some functions are degraded:
Common post-water-damage symptoms: muffled or distorted speaker/earpiece, front camera not working, Face ID failing, touch sensitivity issues in parts of the screen, battery draining faster than normal. These are signs of corrosion damage that may worsen over time or may stabilize. A professional can assess with magnification.
Phone does not power on at all:
The logic board likely has corrosion, a short circuit from the water event, or the battery was damaged. This is professional territory -- ultrasonic cleaning of the logic board can sometimes recover phones that will not power on. Do not assume it is fully dead until a professional has assessed it.
Phone powers on but gets hot:
Shut it off immediately. A phone that heats abnormally after water damage has a short circuit somewhere. More heat means more damage. Power it off and take it to a professional.
Pro tip: If the phone powers on successfully, do a full backup immediately -- right now, before anything else. Corrosion damage is unpredictable. A phone that works today may not work in a week. Get your photos, contacts, and app data off before a delayed failure takes them.

Back up your data before corrosion spreads
This step happens the moment the phone powers on -- before you do anything else, before you test features, before you check your notifications.
Priority order for backup:
1. Photos and videos first. These are the least replaceable data on most phones.
-- iPhone: plug into a Mac or PC and use Image Capture to copy all photos to the computer directly. This is faster and more reliable than iCloud for emergency backup.
-- Android: plug into a computer and copy the DCIM folder directly to the desktop.
-- If USB is not working (common after water damage): enable WiFi and upload to Google Photos or iCloud Photos as fast as your connection allows.
2. Contacts. If contacts are synced to iCloud (iPhone) or Google (Android), they are already backed up. Verify by checking your iCloud.com or Google contacts in a browser.
3. Text messages. These are harder to back up. On iPhone, iCloud backup or a paid app like iMazing can export texts. On Android, SMS Backup & Restore (free app) exports them to a file.
4. Full system backup while you still can:
-- iPhone: connect to a Mac or PC, use Finder or iTunes to create a local encrypted backup. Do not rely on iCloud backup alone -- a full local backup captures more data.
-- Android: Samsung Smart Switch or Google Backup.
After backup is complete: this is when you can investigate what else is working or not working. The backup was the priority. Everything else is secondary.
Pro tip: If the phone will not connect via USB due to water damage in the port, try wireless backup over WiFi. iCloud backup and Google Photos both work wirelessly. This may be slow but it is better than nothing while you wait for the port to dry further.

Understand what professional ultrasonic cleaning can do
If the phone does not power on, powers on with significant functional loss, or has visible corrosion inside (green or white deposits on the logic board), professional ultrasonic cleaning is the next step.
What ultrasonic cleaning is:
A professional technician submerges the phone's logic board (disassembled from the chassis) in an ultrasonic cleaning solution -- typically a flux remover or isopropyl-based solution. The ultrasonic bath agitates the liquid at 40,000+ Hz, creating microscopic cavitation bubbles that physically scrub corrosion and mineral deposits off the logic board's copper traces and component pads. After cleaning, the board is rinsed, dried, and reassembled.
What it can fix:
-- Corrosion on logic board traces that is causing conductivity problems
-- Mineral deposits creating unintended current paths (shorts)
-- Oxidation on connector pads that is preventing proper function
What it cannot fix:
-- Components that were electrically damaged by the short circuit at the time of water exposure
-- Physical damage to solder joints or traces
-- Corroded components (chips, capacitors) where the damage is inside the component itself
Success rates: fresh water exposure caught quickly = 70--80% success rate with professional cleaning. Salt water or prolonged exposure = lower, 40--60%. A week-old exposure with visible corrosion = lower still.
Cost: professional board-level cleaning typically runs $60--$120. This is cheaper than a new phone and worth attempting before writing the device off.
Pro tip: If a repair shop tells you the phone is dead after looking at it for 2 minutes, find a different shop. Properly assessing and cleaning a water-damaged logic board takes time. Any shop offering a thorough assessment and cleaning should open the device, inspect the board under magnification, and give you a specific diagnosis.

Decide whether to repair or replace based on real numbers
Once you have a professional assessment (or after your DIY drying attempts), make a data-driven decision.
When repair makes sense:
-- The phone is relatively new (under 2 years old) and repair cost is under 50% of replacement cost
-- The only issues are functional (port, speaker) not structural (logic board corrosion)
-- You have important data on the phone that was not fully backed up and recovery is the goal
When replacement makes sense:
-- Repair cost exceeds 50--70% of the phone's current market value
-- The phone is more than 3--4 years old (parts availability and software support diminish)
-- Logic board damage is extensive (multiple functions lost)
Check your phone's current market value on Swappa, eBay sold listings, or Decluttr before agreeing to a repair quote. A 3-year-old phone worth $200 on the used market is not worth a $150 board repair.
If you are on a carrier payment plan:
Check with your carrier about early upgrade options. Some carriers will waive remaining payments or offer trade-in credit toward a new device. Check your insurance (AppleCare+, carrier insurance) -- water damage is covered under most device protection plans for a deductible typically ranging from $29 to $99.
If the phone is dead and you need data:
